Billionaire Heiress and Sugar Chronicles

Yayyy, so I finally get to talk about these books. So, I’ve said before that for me to search for a second book of a particular author, it must mean I was impressed with the first one. I know the name, “billionaire” already turned a lot of people off, because a lot of us are over the whole billionaire genre but hear me out!! Nigerian billionaire genre?? I’m sure you didn’t know about it.

I’m reviewing two books by the same author- Tomilola Coco Adeyemo but I don’t know which of the books to start from, because there was one I enjoyed and there was one that I didn’t enjoy so much. Making it easier for myself, I’ll just start from the order with which I read them.

Sugar Daddy Chronicles: Lewa

I know, you must probably be thinking that Jhymi has lost her mind, but again, just hear me out, lol. I was doing that thing Bibliophiles do when downloading a book and goes ahead to download ten more that she didn’t plan to. I downloaded this book without even checking the name, and when I looked closer and saw erotica, I blinked double time and checked the author.

Cause I’d never seen a Nigerian book being labelled as erotica. I didn’t even know what to think of it, because I’d since left reading any erotica books. But of course, what drew me in was the fact that it was written by a Nigerian. That alone made me curious to see what this book was about and so, I dove in.

You guys, so imagine falling in love with your native doctor. Your babalawo! For my non-African readers, that means falling in love with a master of voodoo powers. But what can you do when said babalawo is not some old man in a thatched hut at the evil forest surrounded by thick bushes, but a young, dashing, six footer who lives in a mansion. An imagine that being a native doctor is not his full-time job, but he owns an actual real-estate business or something like that. I know, it still sounds crazy.

Now, here’s the gist. Lewa has been taken by her aunt, Sisi, from the village in Ibadan to Lagos to “learn work,” but obviously, she comes to realize that said work is prostitution. But not the roadside kind. The one with the highest calibre of men and powers in the country. Lewa and a few other girls are taken under Sisi’s wing to enter into this business, but there’s a catch to it.

They are to swear a loyalty oath that binds them to Sisi forever. Violent deaths being what awaits them if they betray her. And to carry out this oath-taking ritual on the girls is Dimeji, Sisi’s trusted native doctor and lover. But Lewa takes one look at him, and she is lost forever. With the full knowledge that her days are numbered, Lewa still falls hopelessly for her Aunt’s man who is a native doctor. What could possibly go wrong?

I won’t even lie I enjoyed this book. I detest a book that is all smut and no storyline. Did this book have descriptive sex scenes? Yeah, it did. But there was a destination, and everything that happened led to that destination. The suspense, mystery, intrigue and above all, chemistry, had me at the edge of my seat. I was hooked and eager to see what would befall Lover girl, Lewa. Lol. I loved it so much that after reading, I decided to read other books by the same author. Giving SDC, a good 8/10. Author outdid herself. Loved it!

Billionaire Heiress of Lasgidi

Something feels missing from 18 year old Nimi’s life. She can’t write anymore, she deigns to be loved by her absentee mother and her Dad who she’s never seen, her grandmother and guardian is dying. And after 18 years of her life, her grandmother on her dying bed announces to her who her father is. Tokunbo Carew, billionaire entrepreneur. And then he’s right there in front of her and sweeps her off to a life and lifestyle she never imagined she could have.

Struggling to come to terms with her new lifestyle, she meets Ryan Dokpesi, dashing, self-destructive Ryan. And our female lead loses all sense of self. Ryan needs to be able to make a hit music soon but lacks the inspiration. Nimi wants to write again. With an environment soaked in debauchery of the highest order, can these two be everything they need?

Hmmm....I do not have words, guys. Imagine starting to like your female lead and then she becomes something so silly and unrecognisable. This book was going well, till it stopped. Maybe I’m the one that doesn’t know how the richer, other-half lives. But, I don’t think it’s like that. I don’t think you live eighteen years of your life with already set principles for you to switch into someone so unrecognisable after just a few weeks. I don’t also think 19 and 20 year olds do... so much. I can’t even explain it.

At some point, it felt like I wasn’t seeing clearly because things seemed to be happening too fast to understand. I kept re-reading to ensure I didn’t skip some lines cause I was confused. I feel like Tomilola Coco Adeyemo, the author, envisioned where she was going, but she lost track along the way and reclined to one of the cheesiest, corniest, American-high school, plots I’ve ever seen. Sad. After how beautiful SDC was, I really was going to make her my new favourite Nigerian romance writer.

I don’t think it’s worth reading. A 4/10 from me. But you may actually enjoy it because through it all, it’s still a fresh experience reading it from the Nigerian point of view. What do you think? Ever read books by this author?
