Reggae ñ More

It actually did cross my mind to change my major playlists this year. But then I thought to myself that I may be overdoing things. Because at the end of the day, I still like the same kinds of music and refurbishing my taste to something else seemed too much of a stretch.

But I think the universe had something different for me because I just discovered that I’m listening more to a different genre of music. For most of last year, I listened more to K-pop and blues which are two of my best genres of music. And while my interest in them has in no way waned, I’ve found myself listening more to Gospel and get this, Reggae.

I saw the first one coming because I’ve been on that path more intentionally this year and loving the experience for that matter so I immediately knew that my music tastes this year would revolve around this. What I didn’t see coming was the whole Reggae bit. Reggae is not a completely new genre to me because at some point in my life, that’s mostly all my Dad listened to. And even till now, my Dad’s happiness runs deep when he listens to reggae music.

I, on the other hand, took it rather casually and simply hummed along to the songs because I’d kept hearing them over time. This year feels different because I started actively seeking them out. And of course, I tilted more to my Dad’s favourite artist, Jimmy Cliff. Him and Peter Tosh have become my chosen artists to drown myself into when I want to listen to reggae music. Oh, Bob Marley too.

It’s been all their albums but mostly ones from a particular era. Hypocrites, Vietnam, I can see clearly now, You can get it if you really want, Trapped, Time Will Tell, Going back West and so on. What I love about this journey is the chance of exploring something new and also that beautiful feeling of nostalgia it gives me. Because I remember nights with my Dad when I was still mostly at home.

We’d sit outside at night. The whole family. And while different songs by Jimmy Cliff is playing in the background, my Dad who is an ace in astronomy would talk us about the stars, the planets and space in general while we’d listen, not trying to mask our awe at the wealth of knowledge he possesses. That’s why listening to reggae music transcends the whole entertainment experience for me.

So yeah, while I had no intentions of refining my playlist, I’m loving all the dimensions my music tastes are going. I don’t feel like I should end this without sharing some of them with you. I especially love this one by Bob Marley mostly because of the rhythm. It’s not your regular beats so don’t expect an influx of bass or any of that. Just sweet, unadulterated music. I’m eager to see if I’d have a different taste as the year progresses. But for now, it’s Gospel and Reggae all the way.

Although I'm from a different part of the world with different tastes in music. But still love Reggae. And Marley is and will be on top of it.
