After some sessions of drawing using a pencil, it feels good to change a little bit. To prepare for this we had a few classes about color theory in my art school. Then, after practicing the basics of watercolor techniques we were ready for our first serious drawing.
Después de algunas sesiones de dibujo a lápiz, se siente bien cambiar un poco. Para prepararnos, hemos recibido algunas clases sobre la teoría del color en mi escuela de arte. Después, tras practicar las técnicas básicas de la acuarela, estábamos preparados para nuestro primer dibujo serio.
As mentioned in my previous posts I don't have the progression pictures because I wasn't thinking about writing an article but I hope to explain the process in detail.
Como he comentado en mis anteriores posts no tengo las fotos de la progresión porque no pensaba escribir un artículo pero espero explicar el proceso con detalle.
First, I drew the contour using a pencil, and the head and clothes features. This was the easiest part since I did this a lot in previous sessions :P.
Primero dibujé el contorno con un lápiz, y los rasgos de la cabeza y la ropa. Esta fue la parte más fácil ya que lo hice mucho en las sesiones anteriores :P.
Then, before starting a painting I decided to split the paint in two, the head and the clothes so I can focus better.
Entonces, antes de empezar un cuadro, decidí dividir la pintura en dos, la cabeza y la ropa, para poder concentrarme mejor.
For the head, I mixed a variety of "skin" colors (which could be a mix of red+yellows or brown+yellow or red+brown) and applied them to a white paper to test that the color value was correct. So, after I was happy with the color value I applied the first layer to the whole face.
Para la cabeza, mezclé una variedad de colores de "piel" (que podría ser una mezcla de rojo+amarillo o tierra+amarillo o rojo+tierra) y los apliqué a un papel blanco para probar que el valor del color era correcto. Entonces, después de estar contento con el valor del color, apliqué la primera capa a toda la cara.
I added more layers to the shadow areas and leave the first layers to make the illusion of light. For the shadows, I added more brown and ultramarine blue to the skin value color I had. The same for the beard but with a more reddish tone.
Añadí más capas a las zonas de sombra y dejé las primeras capas para hacer la ilusión de luz. Para las sombras, añadí más tierra y azul ultramarino al color del valor de la piel que tenía. Lo mismo para la barba pero con un tono más rojizo.
For the clothes, if I remember correctly, I choose a color which was a mix of earth green and ultramarine blue. I applied different layers to make the left side darker than the right one and a slightly more ultramarine blue to the mix.
Para la ropa, si no recuerdo mal, elegí un color que era una mezcla de verde tierra y azul ultramar. Apliqué diferentes capas para que el lado izquierdo fuera más oscuro que el derecho y un poco más de azul ultramarino a la mezcla.
To be my first watercolor painting I feel quite happy with the end result. Also, painting with watercolor was challenging.
Para ser mi primera pintura en acuarela me siento bastante contento con el resultado final. Además, pintar con acuarela fue un reto.
