Mahi toi artwork on Burkes Pass

I have driven through Burkes Pass a couple of times this year and would wonder why people stop at the Mahi toi artwork.

It is a section of Burkes Pass with flat land that doesn't seem to give me much attraction except from the mountainous views on the horizon.

I decided to stop last week and have a look. I learned it is more of a place designed to welcome you into the MacKenzie County, the Southern Alps (Mount Cook), Tekapo.
It is also more of an ancestral spot, with a history of where people gathered for food.

The artwork is made of Oamaru stone, concrete, and metal.
Now I wonder no more but enlightened about the Mahi toi stop on Burkes Pass, State Highway 8.
