Bishop T. D Jakes made a clear statement, "if rain falls it is easy to give someone an umbrella because it is seen that it's rainy, how about one that is soaked in the rain yet you see no rain, how are you going to lend him an umbrella?"
This is the situation we have with one with a mental disorder. It is easier to know when someone is physically stressed but it may show facially or in his gesture; but on the mental aspect, one can be smiling yet he's a walking corpse.
In today's world, we have a case of many mentally disordered people due to one factor and the other. Notably, a few of the ways to know your mental well-being are how you think, feel, and act; more so, complete mental wellness depends on how one handles stress, relates to others, and makes decisions. This is why it is essential we take care of our mental health before ending up a victim.
Just as we take care of our physical health, the essence of this write-up is to give us a deep necessity to pay attention to our mental being.
Understanding Mental Health
When my brother was indebted to a loan of over $3000, he was dying inside. We live under the same roof yet I didn't know what he was facing. On a fateful day, he began to be talking senselessly and angrily. Sometimes, he will mention the loan issue while in the conversation; for instance - "is it because I owe $3000 that is why you are talking to me like this?" This was when I knew he was in big trouble. He lost his appetite for food in days, he withdrew himself from people, etc. This was when I decided to show care about his situation.
From the above instance, the guy was affected emotionally, psychologically, and socially - which are the three factors in mental wellbeing. His relationship with others was not appealing and he was restless yet unable to share what was the challenge. Therefore, good mental health encompasses the ability to handle your emotional, social, and psychological state effectively.
The Impact of Neglecting Mental Health
When you do not take care of your mental health, it can lead to critical issues such as loss of weight, anxiety, fear, depression, etc. I got to see all these symptoms in my brother; and in the psychological aspect, you will have an inability to coordinate, memory loss, lack of focus, etc. When it gets severe, there's a stage of isolation leading to suicidal thoughts.
It is a situation that can be avoided when appropriate measures are put in place, this leads to the benefits of prioritizing mental health.
The Benefits of Prioritizing Mental Health
When one gets mentally deteriorated, his relationship with people is affected thereby affecting his confidence among people. This is why maintaining mental health will mitigate conflicts and boost healthy communication. Also, it can affect the physical health of the person; to avoid these symptoms like heart disease, hypertension, etc it is important to take care of our mental well-being.
Finally, living a mentally free life can enable one to enjoy life’s pleasures, build meaningful relationships, and participate fully in your community because you are well organized in thoughts and achieving set goals.
Conclusion
Taking care of your mental health is a necessity. Therefore, it's essential to recognize and address it when the need arises. By prioritizing mental health, you can improve your overall well-being - physical, social, and psychological leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Conclusively, seek help when it gets out of hand or before it gets to that extent.
