Respect is the way of recognition of the value and hence the rights of everyone, regardless of their age or any other factors. I do believe that always showing respect to the other person helps build balance in a relationship since it is only with such a level of regard that communication can be effectively encouraged.
That is why I believe that I am a person for whom respect comes first. In this case, it is not only row respect into the frames of everyday life, but it is also distance respect at workplaces. I believe, that avoidance of the above would help sustain healthy relations between people.
I can remember some situations when I was disrespected, let’s say, when my ideas were thrown away as unworthy or when I was talking, someone just cut me off. Over such events, it often seemed that my input was not considered important which created anger and bitterness. I found out that those feelings needed to be talked about or acted upon, namely either voice how I was not comfortable with the
situation or simply walk away from the bad situation.
On the other hand, there are some times when I have acted in a manner that was disrespectful without knowing. One such example would be when I raise my voice during an argument and start speaking over the other person. Revisiting that particular moment in time, I came to understand that my enthusiasm had gotten the better of me regarding the other person’s point of view. This incident made me learn how to be an active participant and more importantly; how to wait for my turn before speaking.
The basic principles of respect are not one sided, however. Therefore there is respect that has to be carried out on both ends; this also influences the behavioral patterns adopted by individuals within turn-taking. I have tried to show respect to people and also tried to understand what effect my words and interaction could have on a person. Therefore, creating and upholding respect is key and more importantly as I believe encourages respect to understanding and subsequently cooperation which builds stronger ties.
