Authorities in Poland have arrested Dmitry Vasiliev, ex-CEO of the now-defunct WEX crypto exchange, in Warsaw. This arrest is a part of the United States' ongoing request for Vasiliev's extradition. Vasiliev is charged with fraud and money laundering in connection with his activities at WEX, which collapsed in 2018 with approx $450 million in customer funds missing.

An elite police unit known as the "Shadow Hunters" apprehended Vasiliev at an apartment in the Wola district on December 6. The arrest took effect following a request from the US. Department of Justice, which has been investigating him for his alleged involvement in significant fraudulent activities associated with one of the largest crypto exchanges internationally.

The police also noted that Vasiliev had previously been arrested in Poland in August 2021 but was released after a few weeks, raising questions about how he managed to re-enter and remain undetected in the country since then.

The crash of WEX has been associated with illicit activities and potential connections to Russian security services.

Vasiliev can be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for his alleged offenses if extradited and found guilty in the United States.

This arrest highlights continued global efforts to address money laundering and fraud related to crypto, especially involving individuals connected to Russian financial operations.
