Have you ever felt like no matter how much you do, it’s never enough? You could be making progress, hitting small goals, yet there are days when it just doesn’t feel like it’s enough??
For me, there have been times where I just feel like I’m not doing enough. It doesn’t matter how much progress I make—sometimes, it just feels like it’s never enough. I could be making small wins, seeing improvements in different areas of my life, yet there are days when I still feel like I should be doing more.
Honestly, this feeling is something I have had to deal with for a long time. But instead of letting it break me, I have found a way to turn it into motivation. Yes, it makes me feel down at times, but it also pushes me to improve myself and keep working harder.
Using the Feeling as Motivation
A perfect example is in my academics. There have been semesters where I performed better than the last semester. But maybe there’s one or two courses where my performance wasn’t that good. Instead of celebrating the fact that I did better than before, I find myself fixating on those particular courses—thinking about how I could have done better. It’s actually frustrating, but at the same time, it makes me want to push harder next time. I always just have it in the back of my mind that "well, I didn’t do enough, but then I can definitely still do better another time." I make it a goal to improve on my weaknesses, and that feeling of “not doing enough” becomes a driving force rather than something that holds me back.
But while motivation is good, I also had to realize something else—I needed to stop comparing myself to others.
Comparison is the Thief of Joy
I’ve noticed that one of the biggest reasons I sometimes feel like I’m not doing enough or making progress is because I compare my journey, success, and wins to those of other people. I look at others and feel like they are ahead of me, doing better, achieving more, and that somehow makes me feel like I’m falling behind. But the truth is, everyone has their own path. Just because someone else seems to be at the top today doesn’t mean I won’t get there too.
Once I realized this, I started focusing on my own progress instead of constantly looking at what others were doing. I reminded myself that life is a process, and it doesn’t matter how fast or slow I’m moving—as long as I keep going, I’ll get to where I need to be.
Appreciating the Small Wins
Another thing that has helped me is learning to appreciate my little wins. It is easy to overlook them when we are always chasing bigger goals, but those small victories matter. Every step forward, no matter how small, is still progress. The fact that I keep pushing, keep improving, and keep growing is something worth celebrating.
At the end of the day, feeling like you’re not doing enough is normal. But instead of letting it break you, use it to push yourself further. Stop comparing yourself to others, appreciate the progress you’ve made, and trust the process. Everything takes time, and as long as we keep moving forward, we will eventually get to where we want to be.
