It was the last week of classes before the Christmas holidays, and my film analysis students were preparing to face the final exam. I'm not the friendliest teacher in the world but I always try to be good with my students, so I sent them an exam invitation with a sense of humor. We agreed that at the end of the test, we would have a snack with a toast to celebrate the Christmas season.

As the young people settled into their seats, I watched their faces filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement. We had come a long way together on a complicated topic in the last three months of school. We had analyzed shots, sequences, scripts, and we had discussed the underlying messages of each film.

I gave them some guidelines for approaching the exam and encouraged them to trust their knowledge and their own vision of cinema.

The test was oral, I knew that they were putting all their effort into demonstrating what they had learned. When everyone finally passed, I felt great satisfaction. It had been a pleasure to share my passion for cinema with them and see how they had evolved over those weeks with the first topics of the semester.

At the end of the class, we made a toast and we snack with the meals we all brought, we talked for a while and I wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I reminded them that cinema would always be there to accompany them, to make them laugh, cry, think and dream. And I invited them to continue exploring the world of cinema with the same passion and curiosity that they had shown during those weeks since in February we would continue with the academic period.

I left that exam feeling like I had accomplished my mission. He knew that he had planted a seed in each of them, a seed that, over time, could give rise to new filmmakers, critics or simply film lovers. And that, for me, is the greatest reward. There is no Christmas celebration without gifts, and what better gift than a list of must-see Christmas movies.
