I walk a lot around the forests because of my dog. What the cool thing here in general in the Netherlands is that forest are in general maintained. Not always in the way that everything has to be trimmed, but to keep the health of the forest in order work is done every now and then. That means that sometimes some trees will be trimmed so the plants on the ground get more sun. Or that when a tree looks sick, it is taken down before other trees are infected with whatever it has. Not a bad thing in general I suppose.

Now the past year here the climate has been wet. And I mean like really wet which means the soil isn't the most stabl place for these heavy old trees in combination with enough wind. The roots have trouble grasping and I guess there is also a lot of root rot going on at the moment. That means that these trees will be knocked over every now and then and sometimes they also go other the paths. Annoying to walk around, but on the other hand...it still has their forest function then going on. And they can't be knocked over anymore because they are already on the floor.

When these trees are down, you can see a lot that the ground patrols start to take over the tree. Mos and greens start to grow over them. They start to become a bush at some point even. Little critters find housing within the root pattern of the trees. And the rotting process of the root continues, giving nutrients back to the soil and eventually it falls apart an becomes dust in the wind.

And most of all? It does look quite cool actually. The current state of these forest are that you actually see a lot of tipped over trees. But I can also imagine that like in 5 years, nothing of them will be there anymore, eaten by nature again. Until then...the sight of them remains a work of art.
