Some of the best holidays are the ones where you just pack your bags and take off. But a spontaneous holiday all the time can get expensive and the hangover of the expenses can set you back in your financial goals.
But a holiday planned in advance is a good thing, it keeps you from overspending and you can have a relaxing and stress-free holiday that does not take you a step back from your financial goals.
Essentials to plan ahead to make your holiday a budget holiday and a stress-free one.
Destination – Decide where you want to travel. The beach, mountains, ski resort, retreat, it could be anywhere you have your eyes set on. When deciding on your location, it is key that you choose a destination that you will enjoy. If you are not a sun and sand type of person, it is of no use planning a beach destination, right?
Travel – Get your passports and visa ahead of time. Book your tickets in advance. Booking your tickets in advance has its advantages, especially if you are traveling by air. You get better deals on airfare. Compare tickets on different websites, some companies have promotions and offers that you will benefit from.
Accommodation – Sometimes, accommodation can take up a larger chunk of your holiday budget. Do your research here. There are many options in today’s world for all kinds of budget. All thanks to the world of internet. You can book your stay at a hotel or Airbnb or a hostel. But be sure, to book in advance.
Daily Activities– You don’t have to map out every single of your planned activities. But get a general idea of what activities you are interested in and the cost at they come at. There are some activities that require you to book your tickets / day passes much in advance especially if it is the tourist season. Then there may be some activities that remain closed on certain days of the week. If you will have to take the bus / train / taxi to get to the activity place. By planning your general daily activities, you can get a basic understanding of how much you will be spending on your holiday.
Emergency Fund– Now, an emergency fund should be for just that. Emergencies. It is not your shopping fund. Emergencies can happen anywhere. You may need to change hotels, extend your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Have an emergency fund to get you back home. And, if you do not use this emergency fund, well, you can add it your savings for your next holiday.
Travel Insurance – Let’s not forget the travel insurance. Travel insurance just adds to the whole stress-free holiday experience.
Just by planning your holiday ahead, even 3-4 months ahead of your travel, you can save 25% of your airfare and accommodation costs.
Decide where you want to stay based on the activities you want to do. Take the train and bus when you can or take a walk. Try to avoid the taxi when you can.
Yes, we all like the hotel experience, but if you are planning to spend a lot of time outdoors, then there is no use paying for an expensive hotel. Airbnb’s are convenient and it is a great way to understand the culture and explore better if you have a good host.
When you start planning your holidays, it becomes a motivation in everything else you do. So, go ahead, plan your holidays and enjoy your break.
