When my mind starts getting really torn apart and I feel like keeping it engaged, watching a Crime TV show is one of the many things I use to spend my free time. I like those crime shows especially the ones that are mostly focused on the detective's side of the story.
I know I've also said that I'm a big fan of Asian history. So, a good old Detective Korean drama that highlights major historical crimes between 1958 - 1962 will surely hit the spot for me.
Here's a little profile for the show.
Drama: Chief Detective 1958
Genre: Crime, Mystery, Action.
Network: MBC
Episodes: 10
Release Date: April 19 - May 18, 2024
The title though... People see that and think the show was made in 1958, but that's just the setting of the show. This is a 2024 Kdrama for the big fans of old-school crime-solving stories. Le Je-hoon who played the lead character in this is also reputable in crime-solving shows like Signal and the two seasons of Taxi Driver.
The show follows the story of Park Young-Han who is a reputable detective in the countryside where he holds the highest arrest record for cow thieves. He's passionate about the job and he's tenacious when hunting these petty criminals. He got a call up to work in Seoul Police Station, the capital. This time around, the criminals are more messed up than countryside cow thieves.
In addition to that, the Police in the Capital are already on the payroll of these criminals. So, they are not interested in putting any of them behind bars. The detectives who try to pursue a righteous path usually get clamped down by other detectives. So, this transition to the capital means he doesn't just have to deal with criminals. He also has to deal with his colleagues who give a free pass to criminals.
He was smart enough to know that he couldn't be alone in his pursuit of justice. Thankfully, there were other detectives who are ready to put their neck on the line to make justice served. He worked together with those detectives to dig into several cases in this 10-episode Kdrama.
For someone like myself who's very accustomed to the scientific and high-tech approach used in this modern era's crime solving, a show like this is always captivating to me. It takes me out of this modern reality and pulls my imagination into what detectives had to do decades ago while digging into cases.
Imagine investigating a crime where there is no CCTV camera, no smartphones, all records are on paper, no fingerprint tech, etc. I found it interesting that Koreans already had forensic scientists working alongside the Police in those days. They even had practical knowledge of autopsy although the results were not as well detailed as what's obtainable at the moment.
Those little attention to detail were really interesting to watch as it played out. Watching what detectives had to go through in the 1950s to find evidence in crime scenes makes what we have now paradisical.
I'm not going to hype the living hell out of this show because I already know it's not the sort of show that's everyone's cup of tea. My lady in particular would prefer a supernatural show to this. Haha. Nonetheless, the producers and actors would be proud of this show. They did a really good job.
Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.
