“Black birds tend to like shiny things” ~ The Bloody Raven

It's been a busy, anxiety filled week for me off line with my Home Remediation contractor playing games with me and my tenant regarding home repairs. Despite the situation, my Canada Day posts must go on.

The Canadian Bullion coin!

From my bullion stack and one of my top 10 favorites, and a treat for you Dragon fans.

Gorgeous. And the frosted field and cameo finish on the dragon head features provides a remarkable contrast making photography easy. In hindsight I should have gotten a tube of these beauties.

According to Chinese numerology, the number 8 (eight) is considered “the” lucky number. Coupled with the powerful cultural symbol of the Chinese Imperial dragon, this would be a best seller in Chinese, east Asian, and all dragon coin collectors all around the world.

My only tiny critique for this coin is that it should have been consistent with the Hong Kong/Singapore Tael weight standard of 38g or 37.79g. Though the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has a variety of Dragon themed coins including an $8 Gold Lucky flower dragon and a different $8 8g Silver Dragon Luck coin, the these coins would not really make sense as a Dragon Collection but rather as individual coins. 2017 to 2020 has seen the RCM go 'Dragon crazy' but a boon for Dragon coin collectors wouldn’t care about that huge collector’s premium.

Canada’s 1949 Business strike Dollar

I loved this coin when I first saw it back when I was barely ten years old. Rather than this uncirculated specimen, my father let me play with an identical worn coin such that it didn’t bother him with me handling it with my chocolate-stained kiddy pirate hands.

I have featured this 1949 $1 dollar coin back in February 2020 but for the benefit of my new readers since and keeping in context with Canada Day Circulating commemorative Silver series. This time featuring it with a twist.

In review, this coin commemorates Newfoundland's entering into Canadian Confederation in 1949. And at the same time celebrates the Matthew as Explorer John Cabot's ship back in 1497 at discovering the rugged coast of what came to be Newfoundland.

And for that new twist.

Is the corresponding banknote at the time.

Thanks to @punkysdad for loaning this banknote.

The previous series of 1935 Bank of Canada notes were separate English and French versions, the 1937 series incorporated both languages on one note.

Located at the front of the note the phrase, "Will pay to the Bearer on Demand" means that this note represents 1 Dollar in silver or gold coin of settlement of transactions and debts.

image.png
Allegorical figure of Agriculture

With the establishment of the Bank of Canada Act in 1934, the Bank of Canada was required to hold gold and silver in it’s reserve 25% of the banknotes outstanding and deposit liabilities. Yes, fractional reserve banking since 1935.
Prior to this, the Dominion of Canada backed their banknotes in land.

I’ll be continuing this little Canada Day series through July with the old Constitutional Confederational? Or perhaps more accurately, Demonetized Canadian circulating silver coinage. I’ll be featuring next the 1958, 1967 with a few more select bullion tossed in.

Until my next post! ☠️

Canada's Silver coin are superb. I like the Lucky Dollar with the dragon, it's so beautiful !

The RCM loves Asian dragons.
Canada has a significant sized Chinese community largely centered in Vancouver and Toronto that were multi generational descendants from those that came in the 1800s to live the dream as immigrant workers. The Canadian National Railroad was built to the Independent colony with the labor of these sojourners to complete the deal by 1871 for the new Province of British Columbia to enter the Confederation of Canada.
I knew you would like this. @olympicdragon

Sounds like your Father planted the Silver stacking seed!😊
I must admit if it wasn’t for my Father as well I would not be a stacker….😇
I hope the contractor has repairs under control, have a wonderful Sunday!🤗

And he got it from his great Grandfather who was rumored to have hoarded silver coin rather than keeping it at the local banks. Those banks went under and he did well. His little Diner, grocery shop, one billiard table hall thrived while most of the town suffered from a devastated economy. It's a long story with missing gaps.
Thanks for chiming in @silvertop

Sounds like a very wise Man @kerrislravenhill!😀 If hard times come around many will be caught off guard again! We could all take lessons form your Grandfather!!😀

!PIZZA is better than hardtack bread. ☠️

wow, I really like the pirate and the dragon coin.

Special the dragon one!

I could kick myself for not getting a roll of these 2018 Lucky Dragons, I've got only two, one for each of my sons.
There's a link to the Website that sells the Pirate hanky, subject to available stock.

Thanks for being a part of the crew @urun ☠️

How am I not aware of that dragon coin. Gonna have to look into that.
Nice ship dollar.
Hope all is going well.

This coin is made beginning at 2017 to 2020 with the same design, I'm not sure if it went beyond 2020. There should be some floating around. Knowing you, it'd have to be a Proof MS-70 in a NGCS equivalent slabbed specimen and no less.

Thanks for coming aboard @silverd510

Great post. Cool dragon coin!! Nice collection! Well done.

@kerrislravenhill i have seen last time a lot of Canada dollars that are not made out of silver but have the same design as the silver ones.

Those are made out of nickel.

As you have a lot of know-how, i would ask you why?

As I see it from pictures difficult to see the difference. Only the size is something to look at.

:D

Canada decided to stop coining currency in silver and switch to pure fiat using nickel after 1967, some 1968 50% silver 10 cents and 25 cents being the exception. The US did the same after 1964 with exception to halves up to 1970. In fact all countries de-silvered their coinage in the late 60s. Coincidence? I don't think so. Coordinated? Yes. Setting the stage for revoking the Bretton Woods a few years later. Just don't get me started on the huge profits the government makes in Seniorage.

20220716_162129.jpg

The 1968 Nickel metal Voyager dollar is the first year until it ended in 1986 when the much smaller bronze Loon Dollar came in 1987.
The Nickel Voyager, right, is 2mm smaller in diameter also a little thinner than the silver Voyager on the left. Silver coins have a distinct ring when struck with another coin.

Wow, thank you very much for this detailed answer!

I knew I was right asking you!

I wish i can have one to show my children
Never heard of these before
Can they be used to buy something for exchanged for goods??

I buy and accumulate silver and gold coins as my long termed savings as opposed to fiat currency of my country as the currency is subject to high inflation and it is getting worse at this time as I predicted years ago.
Those silver coins that are denominated in $CAD are Legal Tender but the old 1949 silver coin is tradable as barter for it's collectable and silver/gold content commodity value.
The value of the commodity begins to play the role as money when the fiat currency hyper-inflates becoming worthless. And, I have traded silver for goods before as a trial run. Not many retailers have considered this as a payment option yet but when the economy goes bad there will be a need for money everyone can trust.
I have a few hundred old silver dimes and quarters for Emergency commerce, if it does not happen as bad, I can pass it on to my kids to safe guard their future.

And I got a fairly terrible dental record to back up that claim that I had a voracious taste for chocolate. With my pancreas protesting lately, it will have to be much lower quantities or sugar free chocolate. 🍫🍬🍭

Hopefully @kerrislravenhill, the whole rental thing will get sorted out soon and life can go back to normal for both you and your tenants.

Very nice shiny! I like the dragon a lot; the detailing, the frosted background and shiny dragon. Very nice! I especially like the bank note as well. I remember our version down here in one dollar and five dollar denominations. I had some stashed away, and while at work some years ago, our sons raided them and spent them as regular money. I didn't find out until some years later, that they were gone. That was before we had a locked area for such treasures. Kids!🙄. Anyway, thanks for sharing and have a lovely week!🤗💜😘🌹

They must have though they've discovered 'Buried Treasure' then spent the windfall before the pirates came back for their booty! I try to keep my kid's up to speed to what I am accumulating. Their eyes sometimes glaze over as say, "That's nice."
The banknote does put a better face on how King George VI looks like that what the coin can portray.

Thanks for dropping by @elizabethbit 💚

Someday, the kids will be thankful for your financial finesse! Take care my sister!🤗💜

The dragon coin is awesome, and I love the welcome to Newfoundland dollar, I recently ordered a bunch of old Canadian coins and looking forward to their arrival.

Most of these Canadian Silver $1 coins were passed on to me by my Father, the 1949 coin I just love for the ship design. Of the four 1949 coins in my possession, 2 including this Uncirculated one was from his estate, and the other two I've added to my Stack and would love to get more of them. I will be headed out to an LCS out of town to hopefully pick up another plus whatever Numismatic gems that tickle my taste.
I've considered it as my YouTube avatar coin but I believe everyone would mistake me as a 'Newfie'.

Looking forward to see what you got @bitcoinman

That's amazing I hope to pass down some stacks to my youths , I also ordered that totem one you got in the corner on the last picture

No ordinary Totem. That's coming up next with a 2 oz Silver Bullion coin.

Floreat Terra Nova

Thomas Shingles the chief engraver had contributed towards so many Canadian coins, it seems he has made history remember his name for centuries to come.

You have shared exquisite commemorative pieces this time.

Have an amazing new week.

There has already been too much ENGAGE today.

Before WW2, Newfoundland carried on as a distinct country of it's own until after with it's own silver and gold money. I have a few Newfoundland coins that were owned by my Father that I have yet to share.
The RCM had definitely hired the right person as Chief Engraver leaving an amazing legacy behind.

Thanks for coming by @emaxisonline

It’s interesting seeing how well these premiums hold up even with spot below $20…. I’m fishing for private sellers looking to dump and will pay spot for cash on side. The comimg months will be wild market wise and I’m looking to buy buy buy when there’s pain from private sellers.

⬆️ That’s a beautiful Coin 🪙 🙌

It goes to show how distinct the Physical market is different from the Paper market. A YouTube silver channel, Goldsilver Pros tried to document their attempt to 'follow-the-silver' from the COMEX, they made an account, placed their order, stood for delivery, order gets cancelled for X reason, X rectified, Repeat order, Stood for delivery, Order cancelled for Y Reason, Y recitifed, repeat order, order cancelled for Z reason. So on and so on, etc.
They finally bought their COMEX bar but still cannot take physical possession of it at the warehouse. Goldsilver Pros only had legal ownership of the said COMEX Bar!
I bet the COMEX is charging storage fees in some fine print.
So there's our Supply chain issue.
