ReadyWise Survival & Emergency Food; Cheesy Lasagna with silver on the side.

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven.

Inspired by @silversaver888’s Lunch post , my recent comment on @welshstacker’s thought provoking Post and my recent task of rotating the canned food goods in my expanded pantry, my roommate and I decided to try one of these items before we it stow them away into the very back. To our Hive food connoisseurs, be warned, I do not have my sister silversaver’s culinary acumen and panache.

The selected dish is called Ready Wise Cheesy vegetarian Lasagna, with the word vegetarian inconspicuously printed small on the back, one of a selection of different dishes available either in separate envelopes or in a bucket assortment. There is 257 grams of product in the foil pouch sufficient to make four servings for an equivalent of 230 Calories each therefore only a part of a nutritious post disaster meal plan and it is up to our discretion on an appropriate side dish to make it up the remaining daily 2000 Calorie required by an average adult male over the three meals, 1600 Calories for adult females. A handy calorie calculator is here.

The added side dish could be simply doubling the portion, adding a different selection, or I could draw a food item from my rotated normal canned goods that have up to a 5 year shelf life, like Spam or Hereford corned beef which I simmer in boiling water for a few minutes to rid the excessive salt. I do have a bucket of Ready Wise freeze dried beef and chicken so I can afford to pass on the wood pallet roasted Raccoon a-la carte.

Advantages;

  • 25 year shelf life.
  • 4 serving Mylarfoil package for reduced waste.
  • Just add 4 cups of boiling water, let stand 20 mins.
  • Can be consumed cold when there is no heating source.
  • Backpack portable for camping.

How’s the taste?

With the boiling water method in a pot, I let it simmer a few extra minutes. There is a mild lasagna like aroma as I stirred more than occasionally to break up the powdered globs. The consistency is much like a thick soup by the end of 20ish minutes.

A few of macaroni playing the pasta role of the lasagna had an undercooked texture. The overall taste and texture experience best resembles a macaroni and cheese dish left in a slightly unsealed Tupperware a few days in the fridge with a surprisingly decent tomato and lasagna spices sauce. It’s passable, maybe better with a glass of merlot. Doable if you’re not a picky eater living in recession or depression conditions.

My opinion may change as I may try out other brands of Emergency foods in the future. Any of you Vets out there try those, Meals Ready to Eat, MREs? How were they?

Why Stack Emergency Foods?

According to my local Civic and Provincial authorities it is recommended for every household to maintain a three to fourteen day supply of food, water and such in it’s BC Guidelines in the event of an emergency. I noticed that ‘Disease outbreaks’ being a recent add to the list of potential disasters. Odd, that there is no mention of Economic disaster.

As beautiful as the forests and mountains of British Columbia are, we are just as susceptible to natural disasters. Most often are annual fire and floods depending on the season as entire towns and communities could be cut off by ragging fires or over-swollen rivers. Most concerning will be Earthquake and Tsunami risk since I am located not far enough from the three way geological plate intersection local earthquake zone. While we may have warning systems in place leading up to an impending disaster with established guidelines to prepare for one, there really isn’t a public plan for the oncoming economic disaster. Instead we are told that everything is just peachy fine. It’s just a few banks, the system is sound. It was a little software glitch. Your money is safe with us. Hey, look here, UFOs with aliens!

Stacking long termed foods is a relatively new thing for me, but as an extension of preparing for what may possibly be a disorderly economic reset. If it is orderly, then we could eventually eat through the food stock anyway. No loss. Then replace. It’d be better than fighting the shopping crowds with what little buying power is left with our fiat followed by weeks perhaps months of supply chain issues until things work out. With Natural disasters three to fourteen days will not be enough, as I have observed about any Government assistance over the previous years assistance more often to the tune of months regionally, let alone a global wide one.

The Mountains and Forest Silver feature

In keeping with the inspiration of beautiful rain forests and mountains is this mysterious poured silver log round. 💋 Nyssacat gave me this round in 2021 but I have yet figured where it came from. Based on it’s style I’d guess it came from Canadian Silver artisan Black Label Bullion.

Front; Symbol of Mountains, forest, water and sunshine.
0.999 Fine Silver, Weight 16.28g.
Diameter 18.3mm x Thickness 5.6mm.

Back; ½, .999FS.
Mintage; unknown .

And, the distinctive feature being the simulated 🌲 tree bark edge on this silver Log round. Isn't that naturally cool? Thanks for coming aboard on #piratesunday. ☠️

I think water is the most important thing and after that weapons. If people know that you are a stacker, in this case you become a target when it goes down. Better to be the one that hunts, than the one being hunted, even if it sounds morbid.

If it makes you feel any better, you would be amongst the first I would eat. You look delicious!

I know, enough fat to have a tender stake out of me. That marble!

I have a Berkey Imperial model water filtering system that can process enough potable water for myself and immediate neighbours. And I have already identified two sources of water but that is a subject for another time ....when I get around to it. I also have a roof water collection system into a cistern.
Only a few people in my hood know of my stacking, they also soft prep and have a survival plan should things get dicy. I'm networked and also well armed.

Ok, then it is fine. Good thinking. I have also one, where I use the water for the garden now, as it keeps the cost low.

What if there's no clean water supply? Can I use piss instead?

I would imagine that that would actually increase the palatability of some of that freeze-dried crap on the market. @kerrislravenhill looks to have some decent stuff. Ive tried and tested A LOT of "survival* stuff i wouldnt even feed to my dog.

So, to answer your question - it depends on what youve got stored away

So, to answer your question - it depends on what youve got stored away

Barrels and barrels of piss! 😂

So that wood pallet roast Racoon is looking better the more you think about it, still a bit gamey taste that could be masked by lots of rehydrated Heinz ketchup.
I wish ther'd be a better variety of brands to compare quality and price here.
Thanks for commenting @welshstacker

Thanks for the tag.

When it comes to long term food storage solutions, were kind of screwed over here. Theres not many "real preppers" here as our little island is far too small to actually buggout. All MRAs are incredibly expensive, so i just opted for the basics of rice, beans and anything that has a 5yr shelf life +.

My garden is pretty self sustainable through the summer/autumn months and im working on a new warmhouse for year round salads and veg.

It all takes time and effort..... so much effort with 2 kids and a full time job!!

While I have plenty of local sources I wouldn't need to prepare that far. I have a Berkey system should I have to draw water direct from the Fraser River. It's already possible to process urine into potable water. The technology has been around for over 10 years. 🍻 Cheers! @trumpman

I never thought about having to resort to emergency foods and that shelf life made my eyes bog out. But this looks mighty delicious and seeing the other cans, it may just be worth it after all.

Emergency foods are just for that very reason, a food shortage caused by circumstances that are out of our control. After a severe earthquake, electricity and fresh water supply infrastructure ceases, streets and highways become impassible. Local grocery stores would be depleted in days. It could easily be weeks or months before government services are able to provide assistance. I simply have a long term plan in place. This is merely a part of that plan. It's not fine dining but a practical element of the plan.
Appreciate the comment @jhymi
!PIZZA

I have dried several of the freeze dried meals none of them are good. I store raw goods that I can make food I could possibly enjoy instead. Rice, beans, flour, spices, etc

My family loves long grain rice so we have lots of it. The difficulty comes in storing in quantity for over a year when I go through far too many oxygen absorbers. I still can't get my adult kids to eat beans, unless they're hungry enough. In a depression situation anyone can get hungry enough.
Thanks @silverd510
Haven't tried freeze-dried !PIZZA yet.

I have a food saver vacuum that I use with Mylar bags. On rice and flour I don’t even use the oxygen absorbers, it’s like a brick when I’m done.

Sounds like a good solution to pack my rice supply for over 12 months. Rice has doubled in price in the last year.

Just in the Mylar bags vacuumed it’s good for 10 years. If you add an oxygen absorber it’s good for 30.

Thanks @silverd510 at least I'm on the right track.

MREs are okay if your hungry, taste just depends on the meal. They are newer since I was in and they have some better meals now days. They may be worth trying. But they are all made for stuffing you with calories for sure, especially the cold weather MREs.

I can understand a typical soldier would require up to 3000 calories a day in the field especially performing under extreme conditions cold weather on top of a combat situation. I remember a famous quote; "An army fights on it's stomach." would be quite true.

Thanks for coming aboard @coinjoe

The fancy tomato sauce and spices saved this dish from a 2 out of 5 to a 3 out of 5 rating in it's class. You know these meal packs are practical and can be traded for other goods. Inflation over 25 years will make these cost effective food, can't promise if it is taste or nutritiously effective after 20 or 25 years.
I'm still not sure if it is Black Label Bullion's stamp, but I will find out later.

I used to eat this when I was little but I don't think we have it available in my country anymore...
The company that used to produce it no longer does it anymore...

This dish more resembles Macaroni & cheese with a fancy ketchup. My kids and I grew up on Mac n' Cheese for years. This Cheesy lasagna hardly appears to be like lasagna. If my regular favorite Mac & Cheese ever stops being on the store shelves I know I will miss the original favorite dish too.

Now you are a wise woman! Food and water storage are so important. Ideally at least a two week supply, but a year would be wiser... In this world weird stuff has happened in the past and will happen again. A major volcanic eruption could cause a year without a summer and billions would likely die from starvation. Asteroids, earthquakes, nasty storms, and endless more bad scenarios. I commend you on being prepared!

Eventually, then come the real danger from those that are not prepared come knocking on our doors. Something to think about, right?

Cheesy lasagna sounds delicious @kerrislravenhill !😀
I think it's very important to keep food like this on hand, this is the first I've heard of ready wise.
Have you heard of Auguson farms, they have a similar product with many different varieties that will last for decades!😀
That's the brand that we keep in storage, you just never know..........😇

Yes, you mentioned that Brand before.
Very little Auguson products make it north over the border the last I checked.
But I got a 16oz tin of Auguson Vegetable Garden seeds suitable for my region. We need to see more of a variety of brands in BC. The prices for Emergency foods is rather high compared to the US Prices.
I pick up a bucket of E food every 6 months next to the Stacking routine. Perhaps I'll pick up an extra since Inflation is hitting grocery costs with a vengeance.

Great minds think alike @silvertop
Hold on to my 25 year old !PIZZA

25 year old Pizza.....that sounds delicious @kerrislravenhill !!😀
Crazy that some things don't cross the border ..........probably all about profit's!!

Hold up you mean I can't eat my precious metals ???

Interesting enough, I can exercise the option of using a package of food like money in exchange for either another food item or product I could use. Everyone needs food eventually.
At a local low risk Penal institution I've seen packages of Ramen noodles used as money between prisoners, sometimes cigarettes.
So, no need to eat your silver. @bitcoinman

!PIZZA

I hear that, It's important to have some rations

Back in the day, I used to eat instant food especially when in a hurry to go to work. But I stopped when I developed food intolerances. This one looks yummy though.

I eat way too much of those Instant Ramen noodles, far too much salt and some have questionable ingredients. A local Asian store has an entire aisle dedicated to various different brands.
The taste of this dish is definitely not 5 star dining but promises a reasonable level of nutrition balanced with ease of preparation, taste and stability for the type of product that it is. If there's a better quality taste one in the market I'd be interested in finding out and likely at a higher cost.

Thanks @jane1289 🍜

Those promising healthy ingredients are just a tactic to invite more buyers to buy..lol.. All packed and instant food is unhealthy regardless of nutrient content..

A lot of Western food producers tend to use mis-leading claims on their labels too. An example is using the claim, "Low in sugar" "Organic" and "Calorie Light" are the most common claims on a broad variety of grocery goods.

Our local emergency and disaster unit always reminds people here to have a go bag. This reminder always falls to deaf ears and when disaster comes people always put the blame on somebody else. I agree that we have to prepare. Climate change is real. !PGM

We're still expecting an overdue theorized once-in-a-10k-year major earthquake sometime soon. When, we don't know. I don't know how the Universities of the Pacific North west came to that conclusion. It may be possible that it was just propaganda. However disasters could manifest in other forms, including man-made ones.

I noticed that ‘Disease outbreaks’ is a recent add to the list of potential disasters. Odd, that there is no mention of Economic disaster.

Odd indeed but of course this is probably done on purpose to hit us even harder when it happens.

It's very smart to stock emergency supplies, I started piling up some stuff last year but also decided to use the goods mostly as we plan on moving again. I'm now creating a list of items to add to our pantry once we have more space (the kitchen is too tiny for this and we have no extra room or cabinets) so I hope to start stocking up in time before shit hits the fan.

The silver is very nice!

I started by picking up a few extra cans of food that I happen to use most often and on sale on a typical shopping day. Cans with long expiry dates from two to four years. Pre-made 25 year shelf life foods tend to be pricey but very convenient and storage efficient. Individual packs can be traded or bartered. I have a portable solar power generator and water filter system should utilities are compromised by an earthquake. I'm basically ready should a disaster strikes.
Scouts honor.

Respect that you are so prepped! Even if we were prepped with tons of food once in the past, we moved countries several times as well as moved into homes filled with the owner's shit (read: another men's clutter) so it would have been difficult in all these homes. Thankfully, we are looking for either a house or apartment next with at least 3 bedrooms and a garage is a must as cars suffer a lot here in the sandy climate combined with the sun. I plan on using part of the garage or so for such things in the future.

I was checking an account here on hive dry freezing food but I forgot the name, it got me interested in such a machine for maybe one day in the future. Maybe you know who I mean?

Anyway, have a great weekend <3

Nice little silver round @kerrislravenhill! As for the food; may I suggest Auguson Farms? They have a website with just about anything you could desire in long term storage food in small and large #10 cans. The shelf life is 25+ years unopened. It is well done and tastes great. You can stock your pantry with things like beef stroganoff, or if you prefer to stock by vegetable, dairy etc, then you can do that too. They used to have a garden variety of seeds for an heirloom garden just in case the world as we know it, comes to an end.

Anyway, thank you for sharing the lasagna and the silver. Take care! !LADY !LUV

I found the Auguson product 30 Day bucket at a sale price of $350 CAD. I may just give this brand a try, it's $50 more than the Ready-Wise version.
