I got my very first phone after my parents celebrated my 9th birthday alongside my sister who was 5. It's been many years now, but the memory is still fresh. My parents decided to celebrate our birthdays on my birthday since my sister's birthday came first. We have the same birth month but her birthday is on the 5th of July while mine is on the 28 of July. We both came first in our class that term and my parents decided to celebrate us. After the birthday celebration my dad went the extra mile by gifting me my very first phone. I wouldn't call it an android phone because androids were very very expensive and it was the period where the prices of sim cards were coming down in my country Nigeria.
It wasn't a new phone, but it was rare and it was touchscreen. An LG touchscreen phone I called it, I wasn't even interested in the name. But men, the day my dad gifted me that phone for coming first in my class I was so happy and so shut of words at the same time. I said the normal thank you in appreciation, but the joy inside me could fill a whole mountain. I would stay quiet and just smile out without knowing. Even in my sleep I was smiling while the phone was close to me. At age 9 I didn't know exactly what I needed a phone for, but I sure knew it made me a big boy. For almost a week I was smiling back to back especially when I look at the phone.
The only time I was that happy again in my life was when I bought my laptop with my own money… well that is a story for another day. For this story, it got to a point when my parents noticed how I was smiling, especially how fast I did my little chores all because I wanted to be with my touch screen phone. I didn't even know how much the phone was worth then but I knew what I had was what adults craved for. It's like gifting a 9 year old an iPhone 13 pro max. Even though iPhone 13 isn't the latest in the market, it's still damn expensive and wanted by a lot of adults.
I couldn't carry the phone out because my parents feared I might misplace it or worse I might be robbed off it, so I only used it indoors back to back. I started learning how to access the Internet through the phone, but mostly used it for playing all sorts of games I could think of. When I resumed school I would save some of my feeding money just so I could buy airtime added to the airtime my dad bought on my phone. Those were the fun moments of my childhood as majority of the times it was just me and my phone and on several occasions my mum would have to seize it in a bid to punish me where it hurts the most 😂.
