Hello Hivers, so today I decided to visit my small home farm. In recent times, I have been busy, and I have not paid much attention to the farm. But this afternoon, on returning from work, I decided to check the farm out, and I was happy with what I saw. So I will be sharing the progress of my home farm here.
I practice mixed cropping on my home farm. The farm is not that big and since it is for subsistence farming, I had to choose mix cropping so I can plant the essential food items I need.
The crops on my farm consist of the following: water leaf, pumpkin, okro, plantain, banana, paw paw, and afang leaf. The aforementioned crops are essential food items in my region of Akwa Ibom state in Nigeria. I can easily prepare a delicious meal without having to go to the market. I have cultivated my home farm for the past two years and I can tell you it has been of help. My expenses on food items have been reduced, and the money is channeled into other human needs.
So today, I harvested my first paw-paw fruit, and I was so excited. This is one fruit I love so much, and having it on my farm is exciting. I know how much I spend on it every day. Here is my first paw-paw harvest.
More of them are up there, I guess making paw-paw juice won't be a bad idea.
Also, I have a bunch of plantains maturing, and I know I am going to have a great time eating them. I might as well let it become ripe so I can have some fried plantain with stew.
Having a farm at home is very necessary and I can tell you that I have benefited from it. I am even looking at getting a bigger farm and going into commercial farming. With the current economic situation in Nigeria, farming is very important as it will help save us from famine. One might not have the purchasing power to get other items, but food is essential, and everyone practically survives on it.
I hope to share more of my farm's progress.
