Fledgling: Part 13

Greetings Readers

I couldn't leave Kay to just rot throughout this series, so she is still around, but as an aid. No more. For now at least.

“I’m sorry.” Said Fledge after he too sat down.

“No, you’re right. I was a coward. My avoidance of becoming a Fell Dragon is the reason the Fledglings needed to be made. Other lives had to be destroyed like mine was. That wasn’t fair of me. I can argue that I didn’t know, but the truth…I understood that a Fell Dragon was needed, and I avoided my fate. You have every right to be angry at me. You likely didn’t ask for this fate. Probably strapped to a chair to turn you into what you are. Screaming…”

Saita stopped herself as she fell into memories, she wished she could be rid of.

“Modern Fledglings aren’t made the same way as a Fell Dragon.” Said Fledge. “But we do give up a lot.”

“That brings little comfort.”

She remained silent for a long time before saying. “I wonder how many other things occurred because of me. What if Meedus is but the tip of the iceberg? Should I even be doing this? It’s selfish.”

“You heard Red-Eye. It’s likely you wouldn’t have survived had you not had your husband there to guide you. We would be in a worse situation if there was no Fell Dragon.”

“Perhaps.”

The two of them remained in silence as Rubar and Red-Eye worked together. It was clear that the Vulpine was starting to get tired, and Fledge wondered how much more the two of them could continue. He stood up and placed a hand on Rubar’s shoulder, giving him some much-needed energy.

Something stirred in Saita. A feeling that something wanted out. It was a rare feeling, but she knew what it meant. Kay was awake. It had been some time since the last time Saita had had this feeling. Fledge noticed her uncomfortable shift.

“What? Need a bathroom? It’ll have to wait till we get to our next stop.”

The stirring was getting more demanding, and there was a nagging pain at the back of Saita’s head. This was new. This was an urgent summoning. This was what it had felt like when Jethron would summon her to speak in the mindscape.

“I need a moment.” She muttered.

“We will be busy for a while.” Said Rubar. “Relax while you can.”

“In that case, I’m going to take a walk.”

“Hold on, before you do. There is no way for others to sense us, right?”

“Not while I am here. I mask our presence. The only things in existence that can sense me are likely you, Rubar, and Heavenly.”

Now sure that it was her asking to talk. Saita closed her eye as Fledge left for a walk.

While Jethron was alive, he had taught her to make a mindscape. A room within her mind that allowed her to speak to anyone telepathically or to speak to the one already within her mind. It wasn’t something she did frequently, nor did Kay welcome the intrusion in her space. But now, the Fell Dragon was trying her best to get Saita’s attention. She knew from experience that if she didn’t answer, Kay would continue to goad her mind until Saita could barely think straight.

This had only happened once, and once was enough for Saita. As soon as she had created the mindscape, Kay was there. It was like looking in a mirror, with the only real difference being that the eye they shared was a different colour. Saita’s grey and Kay’s blue.

“That boy can steal and give energy.” She stated.

“I noticed the giving part.”

“You don’t give without taking.”

“That’s you.”

Kay frowned. Saita had long learned that when Kay didn’t want to argue, she remained silent. A side effect of the torturous childhood she had. Saita also knew that she needed to wait a minute or two for Kay to try, and communicate again.

“You’re a mimic, the only one ever born except for Aidan, and he was a test tube baby. None of your other biological children inherited that, and no other was born with it since.”

“True, but what does that have to do with Fledge.”

“It’s a freak mutation.”

“Like you were.”

Saita knew immediately that was a mistake as she was kicked from the mindscape. Being thrown into consciousness suddenly caused a migraine to start behind Saita’s eye. She pressed the heel of her hand into the eye and groaned.

“Mistress and you having an argument?” asked Red-Eye.

I have actually been sitting with a notebook to ensure that I get the various time travel sequences correct. The story is slowly making it's way onto paper.

For those of you who have never heard of Fell Dragon you can find Book 1 here, Book 2 here, Book 3 here, and Book 4 here, Book 5 here, Book 6 here, Book 7 here, and Book 8 here
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I love discussing my books!
As the series continues, it will combine with another book series I wrote. To avoid confusion about what is happening, introductory chapters will be introduced separately so that you don't have to be lost. However, these chapters will contain spoilers. You can find these chapters here:
Races Explained
Banishment
Royal Guard
Saasha’s Direct Family
Saith Characters Recap
Human Characters Recap

If you need a notebook to keep track of who is who and who is when, just imagine how confused I sometimes get trying to work it all out ! But a bit of depth is a good thing, it makes us think instead of skim-reading 😀

Haha! That's why there are links at the bottom to help remind people. Which makes me think I will need to have another piece that explains when jumps are made and why.
