Fledgling: Part 34

Greetings All

I'm behind in Fledgling again, but I'm hoping that after this weekend I can pull ahead for a few updates. Enjoy this one until then!

Kay looked frustrated, and Saita could see the telltale bulging in the jaw she knew she also had when she started to grind her teeth. Kay was hiding something, and she didn’t know what it was, but she was sure that it had something to do with the stalemate they were in right now.

“Once I learned to make places such as this, I learned that the mind holds much sway, especially emotions and feelings. I can sense your feelings…”

Kay fixed her with scorn and stated, “Saita, we both know I am and have always been intrinsically broken. I don’t feel. Feelings were beaten out of me as a child.”

Taken aback, Saita doubled down, sure that she was on to something by getting a response from Kay.

“Oh, you have feelings alright. Or, at the very least, understand them. How else could you use them against me?”

“Just because I understand feelings doesn’t mean I have them. I’m not like you, who hides at the first sign of difficulty.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Seeing an opportunity to twist the knife, Kay grinned and said, “I see that your husband never told you about us.”

Fury bubbled within Saita, and she could feel the marks on her skin burning. Kay must have seen it too, because her grin lost its humour, and the maliciousness crept in once more. Before she could say anything, Saita leapt at her. The only reason she didn’t reach her twin was because a tall figure with wings invaded her mental room and separated the Dragon and Champion.

“And that is quite enough.”

Before Saita could gain control of the room once more, it collapsed around her. Suddenly finding herself in mid-step of her pacing in the room. She didn’t need to see who stepped in the middle of her fight to know who it was. As soon as she was fully conscious, she could sense him.

Taking a deep breath, she left her room to make her way to where she sensed the life force. It had been several decades since she had last sensed it, but she remembered it well.

Instead of allowing a servant to announce her presence, she pushed through the doors that separated her and the guest who had just arrived on the planet. Queen Kay almost seemed to expect this outcome as she simply waved a hand over to Saita and spoke.

“And this is Champion Saita and Fell Dragon Kay.”

Saita couldn’t help but grin when Jethron turned to look at her with a stern look, “We’ve just met.”

Red-Eye was pacing back and forth in the time corridor they were in. The scent was too faint for him to follow, but there was a scent. He looked back to where Rubar and Fledge were sitting, looking exhausted. Fledge had managed to heal most of the damage done to his friend, but they were both exhausted. It was clear that it had been some time since either of them had been through the time corridors.

Red-Eye couldn’t help but grin. He remembered how groggy his mistress was when she would wake during her resting cycles. Most of the time, she would drop off back to sleep without ever remembering that she ever woke, but other times, she would randomly roll from the bed or wander in a sleep-like trance until guided back to bed.

It was clear this pair were similar. He couldn’t help but chuckle despite their predicament.

“Who were those mutts?” asked Fledge, looking at him.

Red-Eye shrugged, “Do you know every single human in existence?”

Fledge looked like he wanted to argue but instead muttered, “Good point.”

Rubar fixed his bloodshot eyes on his ancestor and asked, “Can you track them?”

“Barely. There is a scent, but it’s muddled. It may take time we don’t have. We may have to rely on some unconventional help.”

“Like who?” demanded Fledge.

“The Heavenly.”

“Oh no! We can’t rely on them.” Snapped Rubar.

This surprised Fledge, who had not seen this side of Rubar when Matta was in their presence.

“You didn’t seem to mind Matta.”

“Matta isn’t the problem.” Said Rubar cryptically before getting to his feet with a grunt. “Can we do this without the Heavenly?”

“It will take a lot longer.”

“Then we better get started.”
