Greetings all!
When we last left the group, Saita was trying to convince Fledge to help her find her son and husband. However, Fledge seems to have some history with the Fell Dragon and isn't keen on helping her. However, he won't be given much choice after today's update.
That statement only solidified that there was a reason that Fledge had woken. He scratched at his head and tried to think of a way to reject the request. He had his reasons to not want to work with Saita, especially at this stage of her life. He was about to open his mouth when Rubar joined him.
Saita did a double take and exclaimed, “Silver-Wind?”
Rubar sat back on his haunches and tilted his head, “Afraid not, but that was the name of my great-great-great-grandfather, or was it four greats?”
“Pfft, of course. He couldn’t travel here, but a few of his pups joined with Red-Eye’s pups, it’s only natural that one would get here eventually.”
Rubar puffed his chest out and said, “That’s another ancestor! You were part of the pack?”
“Decades ago, it’s been more than a century since I last saw a Vulpine. I actually thought the Wolven had been bred out of the population.”
“We’re few and far between, but we can still travel as needed. I see you have met my partner, Fledge.”
“Since when?” asked Fledge with a sigh.
“Since you always ask me to help when you’re awake, and I always seem to be here when you need me.”
Fledge felt cornered. Rubar was right. He was always here when he woke, no matter how many centuries had passed between the times that he had woken. With Saita being part of his old pack, Rubar would be pressuring him to help them. Fledge clenched his fists. He didn’t want to help. In fact, he wanted to tell Saita to return home and wait.
“I need your help.” Said Saita. “If I can’t get Aidan and Bolx back, everything I did between then and now will cease to have happened, and I don’t know how that will affect everything.”
“The Fell Dragon will still be defeated. Your twins will still be born, and you will rule…” started Fledge.
“Want to hedge your bets on all that?” said Rubar. “You more than anyone should know what one small change could bring.”
Fledge knew he spoke the truth, and while he continued to think about it, an idea came to him. If he was traveling within his own timeline, there was a chance that one small change could change the way the fledglings came into being. A way to make the Fell Dragon come into being earlier. A way to not be what he was now. He could do it, but he would need to be careful about it.
“I’ll help.” Said Rubar as he sank to all fours to nuzzle Saita’s chest before stepping back to look at her.
The human seemed surprised by the move, but a small smile played at the corner of her lips. It must have been some time since a happy smile had been on her face. She wrapped her arms from under Rubar’s chin and connected her hands behind his ears. She then lowered the scarred cheek to the fur as she closed her eye. She seemed so content in that moment.
Fledge nodded his head. It was one small change, one that wouldn’t change the outcome of anything of value. He only needed to stop himself from becoming a fledgling, or at least stop himself from doing it for the reasons that he did.
“I’ll help you, but do you even know where we have to go?” he asked Matta.
“That’s why we need your help.” Said Matta, “All those who could have helped us are no longer alive. We have some traveling to do.”
Fledge did a quick head count. There would be four of them. He could handle that.
“You should probably tell him.” Said Saita as she released Rubar and looked at Matta.
“Tell me what?”
“Kay will be joining us on this journey.”
An instinct he didn’t know he had kicked in. The claws had already dug into him a few times before the bulky Saith had put himself between him and the Wolven with the blinking red eye. Terror, agony, and something bubbled up within him.
He had watched the creature step out from the air, and all he could think of was protecting his little brother. He had barely managed to move his brother out of the way before the wolf attacked him. The injury had been light, a way to scare him, and too late, Aidan realised that the Wolven was trying to corral him and his brother downstairs. The moment they were downstairs, the Wolven had launched itself at the Saith.
Bolx had bravely fought while Aidan shielded VB as much as he could. Bolx had managed to teleport his brother and desperately tried to do the same to Aidan but was unable to. Aidan had seen him lose his arm with nothing more than a grunt of pain, still trying to save him, but it wasn’t enough. Pinned, bleeding, and Bolx likely bleeding out, Aidan didn’t know what else to do as blood ran from deep cuts in his chest and arms.
He looked up at the Wolven and knew this wasn’t what the beast had wanted. He just knew it, and the beast knew it too. He had thrown the boy around, spraying blood, until he threw him to the doorway. Aidan lay on the ground, and blood started to pool under him. He could move, and while he should have been terrified, all the training he had gotten from the Academy prevented his mind from succumbing to fear.
The Wolven gave him one look and then turned to savage Bolx, whom he still had pinned under him. The Saith hissed through his teeth but continued to fight. Aidan could have run; he should have run, but he knew what Bolx meant to his mother. If he allowed the Wolven to kill him here, it would destroy what little happiness his mother had in her life. She may even grow to resent her son for having survived.
The fury that burned in his belly turned white as he pushed himself up. Everything hurt, everything burned, but he had to do it. Gathering what energy he had, he leapt on the back of the Wolven, surprising the beast. The Wolven leapt to his feet, trying to dislodge the boy, giving the Saith enough time to scramble to his feet and snatch Aidan up. Aidan knew Bolx was barely conscious, and he wouldn’t be able to teleport the both of them. He was willing to risk his life to save Aidan, but the boy couldn’t allow that to happen.
He had seen the Wolven step out of a curtain of air. He could do the same, but he had no control. That said, anywhere was better than here. He closed his eyes and concentrated, then they were falling. He kept his eyes closed until they hit something. A grunt escaped Bolx’s mouth and Aidan was dropped. He expected pain when he fell, but instead, it was soft and cold. His eyes snapped open. Snow. They were surrounded by snowscape, and neither were dressed for it, especially with blood soaking their clothing.
And that is how Aidan and Bolx survived. But for how much longer can they in this harsh environment?
