When it is Better to Burn a Card Instead of Selling it: a Case Study to Explain it

Considerations about Active Draft Proposals

dividerHive2.png

I'm a Splinterlands player since September 2019, Splinterlands is my favorite blockchain-based game and to date I've played more than 36000 battles without using bots because Splinterlands is a fun game for me.

image.png

On Splinterlands, cards are important because without them you can't play and you can't win battles.

image.png
Battle Link

The cards have many use cases:

  • they can be used to play in the Player Vs Player mode.
  • they can be used as worker cards in land plots
  • they can be rented to other players
  • may be transferred to other players
  • may be delegated to other players
  • may be sold in the Market in exchange for DEC tokens
  • can be burned in exchange for DEC tokens.

Theoretically all cards have the same use cases, but in reality, cards usable in the Wild Format have one very important use case less than cards usable in the Modern Format.

In fact cards usable only in the Wild Format can only be used in a format full of bots.

Because of the bots in the Wild Format the old cards are completely useless cards in game for a real player who enjoys playing manually on Splinterlands and only has fun when playing with real players like him.

How can a real player enjoy playing against bots that are more efficient than him?

This major loss of a use case closely related to play = fun is not the only cause but is in my opinion the main cause why some cards usable in the Wild Format have a lower market value than cards usable in the Modern Format even if they have similar or even significantly higher game statistics or if they have a higher market value are difficult to sell.

Since the split between Wild Format (bots and battle helpers allowed) and Modern Format (bans on bots) all the cards that came out of Modern Format have lost usefulness for real players like me and as a result have lost a lot of value.

Many Chaos Legion cards already have a very low market value because of the large amount of cards in circulation and when they come out of Modern Format they may be worth even less than the value they have today.

I have many Chaos Legion cards in my card collection because immediately after the banning of bots in Modern Format was announced, I decided to play only in Modern Format and sold many of my Beta cards to build a competitive card collection in the only fun format on Splinterlands: the Modern Format.

image.png

When Untamed cards came out of Modern Format I did the same, I sold many Untamed cards to buy Chaos Legion and Rebellion cards.

Thanks to my selling and buying strategy, I now have a competitive card collection in the Modern Format Gold leagues where I enjoy playing.

We are just hours away from the end of voting for the Draft Proposal about the early release of the new set of cards.

image.png

I voted no because even though I love to play on Splinterlands I consider it counterproductive to release a new set if we don't first solve the problem of the uselessness of cards coming out of Modern Format for real players who like to play manually on Splinterlands.

I explained the reasons for my no in detail in my previous post which you can read by clicking on the next link.

image.pngPost Link: Why I voted no for the Conclave Arcane Card Set Proposal: New use cases for Old cards should be the priority!

The draft proposals are not binding proposals but they are the first step towards arriving at a proposal and perhaps for the first time since I have been a Splinterlands player I voted no on three active draft proposals.

image.png

The first two draft proposals are sponsored by the DAO and therefore come from community members and propose to increase listing fees from the current cost of 1 DEC to the cost of 5 DEC or 10 DEC.

I voted no because in my opinion it is the wrong time to think about increasing listing fees because the priority should be to restore, not necessarily economic value, but usefulness in the game to the old cards!

These two draft proposals gave me the inspiration to write the main topic of this post, which is the comparison between the market value of a card and its burning value.

dividerHive1.png

Market Value Vs Burning Value.

1 Case Study with Calculations and Considerations.

dividerHive2.png

Every card in Splinterlands in addition to having a market value also has a burning value because it can be converted to DEC.

For example, the card Cruel Sethropod which is a Chaos Legion card particularly useful in battles that have the Little League ruleset has:

  • a market value = 0.010 USD (Low Buy price per single BCX)
  • a market value = 0.006 USD (Low Buy price per BCX>1)
  • a High Bid value = 0.007 USD (best buy offer in the market)
  • a Burning value = 5 DEC

image.png

While it can be very easy and straightforward to check whether it is more profitable to sell a card consisting of many BCXs instead of burning it, for cards of only 1 BCX and that have a low market value it is not always easy to identify the best choice between burning and selling because selling a card also has two additional costs to calculate:

  • listing fee
  • market fee

In addition, the value of the DEC token plays an important role in this decision.

image.png

For example in my card collection I have:

  • 1 Cruel Sethropod of level 10 =400 BCX that I use in my battles.
  • 2 Cruel Sethropod of level 3 (14 BCX X 2)
  • 23 Cruel Sethropod of level 1 (1 BCX per card).

image.png

If I burn 1 Cruel Sethropod of level 1 I get 5 DEC = 0.00406154$

image.png

If I sell 1 Cruel Sethropod at the price low buy = $0.010 I do not get $0.010 because I have to subtract selling costs from this value.

image.png

The selling costs are:

  • listing fee = 1 DEC
  • market fee = 6% of the selling price.

The total value of selling costs for 1 BCX of Cruel Sethropod sold at $0.010 is = $0.00141231

image.png

Because of these costs, the final gain is 0.00858769$ and is not 0.010$

image.png

In the case of Cruel Sethropod it is more advantageous to put it up for sale instead of burning although an increase in the value of the DEC token and a decrease in the market value of the card could reverse this result.

image.png

It would have been worthwhile to sell Cruel Sethropod even in the case where the listing fees were as proposed in the two draft proposals although in the case of a listing fee = 10 DEC the gain from selling is so minimal compared to the gain from burning that perhaps burning would be more convenient to save time.

image.png

Even in the case of putting 1 BCX of Cruel Sethropod up for sale at Low Buy value per BCX it is better to sell but the difference in gain between selling and burning is really minimal: +$0.00052616 in favor of the selling option.

A listing fee = 10 DEC instead would make burning the cheaper option.

image.png

So dear reader, if you are also a Splinterlands player you should always consider all possible options before selling a card because the value of the DEC token and the market value of the card could change the ratios between burning and selling.

When Chaos Legion cards will come out of Modern Format these calculations might be important because if the value of the cards will decrease and the value of the DEC token will increase burning might be the best option for several cards.

I will end this post with the personal considerations that I also wrote in my previous post and that will be recurring in each of my next Splinterlands posts until things change in a positive way according to my personal point of view.

I love playing on Splinterlands and because of that I only get attached to the cards I use in the game.

But I still don't understand why no action is taken to change the current split between Wild Format (Wild Pass, bots and battle helpes allowed) and Modern Format (only real players allowed).

Is creating a league just for bots really such an impossible solution to implement?

Those who use bots can use all cards from all collections, those who play and want to play manually only against real players cannot!

Why should a real player who likes to play on Splinterlands and gets attached to his cards because he uses them in battle have to be forced to sell his cards every time they come out of Modern Format if he wants to continue to have fun and be competitive in Modern Format?

I hope the intention to provide new use cases to old cards stated by @yabapmatt will include new use cases related to play and fun.

image.pngPost Link: Why I voted no for the Conclave Arcane Card Set Proposal: New use cases for Old cards should be the priority!

I think we will see when CL rotates out of modern, more of these cards fall to their burn value. Without the changes you mention, the long term future of the game is at risk. Also purchased cards should have more utility and value over soulbound ones imo.

I also voted no for all those proposals. The increase of the fees would be terrible for the game. They are already too high. Market fees used to be 5% and even at the time my thought was "why don't we have an interface to do peer to peer trading without any fees or risk of scam?" They've been raised to 6% and now the 10% would be insane. The listing fee also never made sense to me. There should be no listing fee. It was only created because there were some relisting services that kept adjusting the prices of rentals over and over again, undercutting other people, which caused massive server issues. Instead of a listing fee there should be a relisting fee. Any card that has been listed for sale or rent in the past X days, has to pay a big fee to be relisted. It could be 10 or even 100 DEC. That's enough to stop mass relisting without affecting normal users.

I voted no for the new set not because of anything in it but because of the timing. Ever since Untamed, a new core set was released every 2 years (give or take a month). This would give 4 years of modern for every set. However, this proposal days that the new set will be released on April, taking about 6 months of modern from CL. CL buyers are by far the biggest losers in Splinterlands. Not only in terms of monetary value but also in gameplay. For a long time, those who had only CL had to fight against not just Untamed but also Alpha and Beta. Only much later was modern introduced. They still had to face several OP cards from Untamed that were too scarce to get. While older players were able to use earnings from older sets to buy CL, the same can't be said about those who started with CL. We had to choose to invest more in Rebellion or just suck it up and fight without it. And now to have even less time in modern than expected, it's just not good.

I also believe that there should be schedule for sets so that players know how long they have until their cards are not in modern anymore. That isn't something that should change at will because it destroys trust.

Hello and thank you for reading and appreciating my post.

I don't know exactly when conclave arcana will be released, please do you know exactly when?

I think it's time to sell off my cards and probably exit the game because if I probably wait too long my CL would lose all it's value

hi my friend
The draft proposal passed favorably but there will be a proposal that dertimens whether the release of the new set will be anticipated or not.
If the next proposal passes the presale of the new set will begin in April 2025 and the Chaos Legion set will be released from Modern in approximately May 2025.
I hope the next proposal will not pass and I will work hard to promote no.
I will only vote yes if Splinterlands will give importance and game value to the old cards but this is now a hope I have had for a long time and it has never materialized :(

If the proposal is accepted and people begin to pay ridiculous fees, a lot of people may withdraw from playing games

Yes Splinterlands does not need new fees but to give game value to the cards of the first editions

The fees don't make much sense to me. It sounds like Splinterlands is still trying to raise more funds despite getting the DHF funding. I hope they do add value to the older cards.

I hope they do add value to the older cards.

Yes my friend I hope this too otherwise I think the next set of cards will sell the minur number of card packs in the history of Splinterlands

The thing is that if cards stay at burn value like many of the reward and chaos Legion ones now, it means Splinterlands failed and the economy is still broken. So since old card prices need to be fixed for Splinterlands to succeed, I feel it's better to just hold the cards instead of selling or to burn them.

About splitting Wild in bot and human mode, I'm not really sure that I would vote for it honestly. What they need to fix is the fact that players should be able to play at times that they want and can without missing out on earnings. A totally new game mode with different dynamics is needed for that. The reality that most including myself who run a bot in wild simply don't have the time to grind 1-Hour+ each and every day.

What they could do is integrate a bot service in-game at a fair price (which also helps them get some earnings), and when you play manually you get matched up with other human players in the same wild league. This allows players to put things in auto mode while they can play manually and have fun against real human players at times that they want to. This however would be tricky as many would try to cheat the system with battle helpers and such.
