Hello to all my Hive friends, I hope you are doing well. Today's post will be totally special, as I will tell you about the day we decided to adopt Luna, our beautiful furry daughter.
Hola a todos mis amigos de Hive, espero se encuentren muy bien. La publicación de hoy será totalmente especial, ya que les contaré del día que decidimos adoptar a Luna, nuestra hermosa hija peluda.
It was a November 10, 2017, approximately 10 pm in Chile, we were watching TV and suddenly my partner tells me: let's adopt a dog! At first I took it as a "someday", and I said: ok and continued watching TV.
Era un 10 de noviembre de 2017, aproximadamente las 10 pm en Chile, estábamos viendo televisión y de repente mi pareja me dice: adoptemos un perro! Al principio lo tomé como un “algún día”, y yo le dije: Ok y seguí viendo televisión.
A few minutes later I turn around, I see her cell phone in her hand and she was looking at an adoption page called "mismascotas.cl", and there are plenty of dogs and cats for adoption. So I realized that he was serious about it. I told her: well, if we are really going to adopt a pet, I have a few requests regarding its characteristics.
- That it be a female: although I have had males, I prefer females because of the way they pee.
- That she be sterilized: there are too many abandoned and homeless dogs to bring more into the world. Although after a few years, I would have liked to have some grandchildren XD
- Small or medium size at the most: this was important because since we moved from time to time, it was easier to convince the owner of the apartment or house to allow Luna than a big dog.
- That she didn't shed so much hair: since I'm a bit allergic to short hairs, and I didn't want to live sick of course.
Unos minutos después volteo, veo su celular que lo tenía en la mano y estaba viendo una página de adopción llamada “mismascotas.cl”, y ahí hay infinidad de perros y gatos para adopción. Así que me di cuenta que iba en serio el tema. Le dije: bueno, si realmente adoptaremos una mascota tengo unas peticiones respecto a sus características.
- Que sea hembra: a pesar de que he tenido machos, prefiero las hembras por la manera de cómo hacen pipí.
- Que esté esterilizada: hay muchos perritos abandonados y sin hogar como para traer más al mundo. Aunque luego de unos años, me hubiese gustado tener unos nietos XD
- Que fuese de tamaño pequeño o máximo mediano: este tema era importante porque como nos mudábamos de vez en cuando, era más fácil convencer al dueño del departamento o casa de permitir tener a Luna que un perro grande.
- Que no botara tanto pelo: ya que me da un poco de alergia, sobre todo los pelos muy cortos, y no quería vivir enferma por supuesto.
With this in mind, and of course with the idea that having a dog is as big a responsibility as having a human child (although many don't see it that way), and that we had to take care of her forever, we started to go through the website and see how many dogs there were. We had selected a few, but Luna was the first choice. We wrote to the person who had her to see if she was still available and she said yes.
To our surprise, the lady lived in a house that she called a shelter and it was only 3 blocks from where we lived. So we arranged with her to see Luna the next day, November 11.
Ya con esto hablado y por supuesto con el tema de que tener un perro es una responsabilidad tan grande como un hijo humano (aunque muchos no lo vean así), y que había que cuidarla para siempre, empezamos a recorrer la página y ver la cantidad de perros que habían. Habíamos seleccionado algunos, pero Luna era la primera opción. Le escribimos a la persona que la tenía a ver si aún estaba disponible y nos dijo que sí.
Para nuestra sorpresa, la señora vivía en una casa que ella la llamaba un refugio y quedaba a solo 3 calles de donde vivíamos. Así que coordinamos con ella para ver a Luna al otro día, el 11 de noviembre.
When they arrived, there were several dogs, among them, some puppies that looked to be 2 months old. They ran to the door to say hello and Luna was under a chair at the back. We suppose that she had been there for a long time and that she was used to people coming and nobody was going to get her because she was already big, she was 8 months old, she looked like a crazy girl with messy hair, she was thin and her short hair was visible on one side of her recently sterilized abdomen.
Al llegar, habían varios perros, entre esos, unos cachorros que parecían tener 2 meses de nacidos. Ellos corrieron a la puerta a saludar y Luna estaba debajo de una silla al fondo. Suponemos que tenía tiempo ahí y que ya estaba acostumbrada a que iba la gente y nadie iba por ella porque ya estaba grande, tenía 8 meses, parecía una loquita con los pelos desordenados, estaba delgada y se veía el pelo corto a un lado de su abdomen de recién esterilizada.
The lady when she received us asked us if we were going for Luna to which we answered yes, she immediately called Luna and our future furry daughter quickly stood up to greet us. Now that I think about it, I guess Luna knew she would be part of our family from that moment because when she came to greet us and the puppies too, she barked at them to drive them away, I imagine it was something like: go away, this time they are looking for me.
La señora cuando nos recibe nos pregunta si íbamos por Luna a lo que respondimos que sí, ella enseguida llamó a Luna y nuestra futura hija peluda se paró rápidamente a saludarnos. Ahora que lo pienso, yo supongo que Luna sabía que sería parte de nuestra familia desde ese momento porque cuando se acercó a saludarnos y los cachorros también, ella les ladró para alejarlos, me imagino que fue algo como: váyanse que esta vez me buscan a mí.
When we were leaving, the lady told us: please, if you don't like her, I prefer that you bring her back to me, don't abandon her. We would never have done that, in any case, we would have looked for a home for her, but that was never an option, Luna would be ours forever.
When we got home, the first thing we did was to give her a bath and let her be and see how she behaved. Well, as expected, she peed on the living room floor, and we locked her on the balcony. She was very cuddly because she just sat there and every now and then she would paw at us to get us to open her up. The days went by and we started to complement each other, we played with her and taught her things.
One of the things we noticed was that she had sores on her gums, we assumed it was due to bad feeding stress, because after a week they were gone.
Cuando ya nos íbamos, la señora nos dice: por favor, si no les gusta, prefiero que me la traigan nuevamente, no la vayan a abandonar. Jamás hubiésemos hecho eso, en dado caso, hubiésemos buscado un hogar para ella, pero esa nunca fue una opción, Luna sería nuestra para siempre.
Al llegar a casa, lo primero que hicimos fue bañarla y dejarla ser a ver cuál era su comportamiento. Bueno, como era de esperarse, se orinó en el piso del living, y la encerramos en el balcón. Era muy tierna porque se quedó sentada ahí y de vez en cuando le daba con las patas para que le abriéramos. Los días pasaron y ya empezamos a complementarnos, jugábamos con ella y le enseñábamos cosas.
Una de las cosas que notamos, es que tenia llagas en su encía, asumimos que era por mala alimentación estrés, porque a la semana ya se les habían quitado.
With the passing of time, Luna has adapted to all situations, moves and trips. If we go out, she also goes out, she practically never stays home alone, we never leave her alone either because she suffers from anxiety and we worry about her stress level when she is alone, but to tell the truth, we love going out with her, she is a good company since she is usually so calm that she doesn't even feel it.
Con el pasar el tiempo, Luna se ha adaptado a todas las situaciones, mudanzas y viajes. Si salimos, ella también sale, no se queda prácticamente nunca sola en casa, tampoco la dejamos sola porque sufre de ansiedad y nos preocupa su nivel de estrés cuando se queda sola, pero a decir verdad, salir con ella es nos encanta, es una buena compañía ya que normalmente es tan tranquila que ni se siente.
ANECDOTES
- The first time I took Luna down for a walk where we lived, I decided to let her off the rope and said with fear in my mind: if she stays by your side: it's because she is yours; if she leaves: it's because she never was (and you will have to run after her to look for her). Fortunately for me, since that day, Luna is a free soul who walks without a rope and always by my side. I only put it on her when there are a lot of cars around.
- The first months when we left her alone, she would eat whatever we left around, potatoes were one of the things, some shoes, bag zippers and if we left her cardboard to play with, we would find it as if it had exploded and was left in little pieces.
- She is very smart, I have had many dogs and she is the fastest learner. She knows how to sit, she dances to ask for food, she knows how to give both paws, she knows how to hurt herself when you make you shoot her, she knows how to lie down, she knows how to close the door and she even knows how to take selfies with me. He also understands words like: Come on, to his bed, go out, come in, go to sleep, among others.
- She likes to be the alpha of the pack, I think she would do well as a sheep dog too.
ANECDOTAS
- La primera vez que bajé a Luna a pasear por donde vivíamos, decidí soltarle la cuerda y dije con miedo en mi mente: si se queda a tu lado: es porque es tuya; si se va: es porque nunca lo fue (y te tocará salir corriendo detrás de ella a buscarla). Para mi suerte, desde ese día, Luna es un alma libre que anda sin cuerda y siempre al lado. Solo se la pongo cuando hay muchos autos cerca.
- Los primeros meses cuando la dejábamos sola, se comía lo que dejáramos por ahí, le papas era una de las cosas, unos zapatos, cierres de bolsos y si le dejábamos cartones para jugar, lo encontrábamos como si hubiese explotado y quedado en pedacitos.
- Ella es muy inteligente, he tenido muchos perros y ella es la que más rápido ha aprendido. Sabe sentarse, baila para pedir comida, sabe dar las dos patas, sabe hacerse la herida cuando haces que le disparas, sabe acostarse, sabe cerrar la puerta y hasta sabe tomarse selfies conmigo. También entiende palabras como: Vamos, a su camita, sal, entra, a dormir, entro otros.
- A ella le gusta ser la alpha de la manadas, creo que le fuese bien como perra ovejera también.
And well, today she is the darling of the house and we continue to see her with the same loving eyes as always. We definitely love her!
