Hello friends of Arquitectura+ Diseño!

The Plaza de la Revolución, located in Havana, is a place of immense historical and architectural value. Upon arrival, one encounters an immense esplanade of 72,000 square meters, surrounded by imposing government buildings and monuments that narrate the history of Cuba. The setting is majestic, with wide avenues and open spaces that invite reflection and remembrance.

Today I am very happy, because I could finally enter the José Martí Mausoleum, because although I have come several times in other stages of my life since the pandemic that struck the world in 2019 it was closed for restoration and took a long time to open it, then I was other times and could not enter for various reasons, but today I could finally satisfy my desire and even happier because I came accompanied by my family, my son, nephew and my mother, who despite being 78 years old asked me to visit her because she always saw it from outside but had never entered.

As soon as you approach the Mausoleum of José Martí, you have to go up a ramp of light brown ceramic lattice that makes circular drawings, it is a very nice path that leads to the sculpture of José Martí in a pensive position, it is completely made of white marble, of imposing size, in some bibliography, it is noted that it is almost 120 meters high. On each side it has three small columns that make a total of six, which was the number of provinces in which the country was divided before the current administrative division. The statue is always guarded.

In front of the statue there is like a balcony, when you stand you can better appreciate the environment around you and see some marble stands that when activities and rallies are offered in the square in them are located personalities of the country. Bordering the tower there are four equal fountains from which water emanates and falls into a small pond all made of marble, where the water slides and is recycled. Near each fountain there are several palm trees that accompany them being a nice detail.

The tower that rises behind the statue, which is part of the sculptural ensemble, is shaped like a star. At the entrance there is a small reception where you can leave your bags to walk freely through the different rooms it has, in addition to paying a small fee for touring it.

At each point of the star that forms the structure, there are different thematic spaces. Upon entering, in the first one we went to, we were greeted by a bronze pen, a replica of the one Martí used to write, a symbol of his literary and patriotic legacy. Next we found a photographic exhibition with images of different personalities, I was very impressed by the photographic art of many of them.

Another space was dedicated to events and meetings. For the little ones, there was a children's workshop, where children could express their creativity and inspiration, both in music and in the plastic arts.

One of the rooms narrated the history of how it was built, I took pictures for you to see. Finally, a special room exhibited Martí's belongings. In this room I saw a bird in an urn, it was a Quetzal, a gift from the president of Guatemala to Martí. There is also an urn where there are Cuban coins and bills minted with his figure and a wooden pulpit where he made oratories.

From the main hall you can observe distinguished golden columns that border the 5 peaks of the structure, circular in shape, and in the center there is a large bust of Martí and some sculptures of Cuban artists. There are wooden structures that adorn and serve to place some works, such as a Cuban flag in acrylics of different colors, made with the artist Emilio Valdés. There is also vegetation, the mosaic wall with colors of different shades of green and blue, with some phrases written by him, with golden letters that evoke his thoughts, one that I could capture whole that says "Children are the hope of the world". I really like this phrase, I have faith in it.

When I went to Cuba, this was one of the first monuments I visited but at that time I couldn't go up because the lift was under maintenance, I'm waiting for your next post to know about that experience and the view from the top.

Hello friend, a beautiful walk through the mausoleum, I virtually walked through every space reading your lines; the star shaped tower and the sculpture look spectacular, nice pictures.

Happy weekend!

Extraordinary architecture @lileisabel! This is one of the grandest mausoleums I've ever seen! Plus, this iconic landmark even has attached spaces dedicated to remarkable historic exhibitions. I can't wait to experience your design tour of that tower and the spectacular vistas it offers. A desired visit indeed! ☺️

It is a place that I really wanted to visit and I was very happy to be able to do it with my family. It also has surprising architecture, a lot of history and recognition of our great José Martí. Soon you will see everything that can be seen from above👌🏽👍🏽
