Now that I am on a break from school, I decided to make something I have always wanted to do: a crochet keychain.
Earlier this year, I moved into a new place for my university. There are four of us girls in the house, when we moved in, we decided to get a new padlock since the last occupant didn’t leave theirs. My roommate got the keys, and I never really thought that they would be this small.
Although, I wasn’t too concerned at first—I just needed the key to open the lock—less concerned about the size, because I thought I would be getting a keychain for it. Unfortunately, keychains were quite expensive and I couldn’t justify the cost. or should I say, fortunately? Because I got to crochet one instead.
I didn’t mind the tiny key until the day I misplaced it. It was on a Sunday morning, no one was home, and I was getting ready to attend Sunday service. I spent about 30 minutes looking for the key so I could lock the door on my way out, only to find it under my roommate’s bed. I was so frustrated and stressed. I knew if I had a keychain, I wouldn’t have had to go through that hassle to find it.
Since I wasn’t willing to buy a keychain at a high price, the idea of crocheting it came to me. I didn’t really spend time thinking of a keychain idea to make. When I make something for myself, I love to create things I can connect or relate to. Initially, I thought about crocheting only my initial, just the capital letter ‘L’. But then I realized, what is the fun in just an ‘L’? I might as well write the short form of my name, ‘Liz’.
This keychain is a simple one and it’s easy to make. Because I moved it around a lot, I chose a dark colour to avoid it getting dirty quickly, but plain black would be boring, so I decided to add a touch of pink to it.

A brief tutorial
First, I crocheted two L-shaped pieces. The letter L is very easy to make:
- you just have to crochet a straight line of about 1 inch wide and the length should be about 4 inches.
- Then, crochet a small square onto the long side.
- After that, I added some designs to it, like tiny dots and my name using a darning needle.
- Finally, I joined the two pieces together using a single crochet (using the pink yarn) and I added little straps alongside and stuffed it.
Very easy!
When I was done, I realized I needed a key ring. I pulled an extra one from my dad’s key and attached it to my key and keychain.
The result is a nice keychain that I can easily spot. I love it.
Not only can you use it for your keys, but you can also attach it to your bags or use it as an appliqué.
Creating this keychain was fun and satisfying. It is amazing how a simple crochet project can solve a practical problem.
