Quick intro about me:
Hi everyone, I am LovelyScape (Gabriel Mihalcea), and this is my first movie review in this group. I will try my best to obey the rules and to provide quality personal reviews of movies I've seen, starting with Glitch.
About the movie: Introduction
Glitch is an Australian TV series of 3 seasons premiered in 2015, currently available on Netflix. The series takes events in the fictional town of Yoorana, where, for some reason, a group of people long dead people came back to life with no memories but in perfect health. Some of them died even 200 years ago, while some others only a few years ago or decades.
Here comes in play, Kate Wills (played by Emma Booth), the dead wife of the cop James Hayes (played by Patrick Brammall), two characters set to play the leading roles around the movie.
Whilst confusion is on the pilot episodes and around the first episodes, both set by the characters and for the viewer, things will get much more apparent on how these events happened and how those people were brought back from the dead. The answers will leave a sour taste to the viewer, which is based on scientific actions taken by some scientists working on a pharmaceutical company, Noregard.
Even the scientists don't fully understand the process; however, it appears that Doctor Elishia McKellar (played by the famous actress Genevieve O'Reilly, also known to be played in Star Wars and Matrix movies) had played an essential role to the event of bringing people back from dead.
SPOILER ALERT: Although many people from Noregard and beyond were looking for answers on how this happened and learning the secrets of bringing people back from the dead, Elishia dies before revealing any secrets.
However, there is another plot: For a good part during the three seasons, the group of people that came back to life cannot leave Yoorana because once they go, their eyes start bleeding, they die again, and they turn to ashes. There is an invisible barrier force, which scientifically was described as an ionized field from the experiment. That field will narrow as it fades; therefore, some characters are working around the clock to find a solution to extend the field and keep them alive.
Glitch: A character development
In this TV series, the characters constantly change roles during the three seasons, from bad guys to good guys, or from the good guys to bad guys, which makes the story very intriguing but at the same time confusing if you missed some episodes when changes take place.
Even more, although the people who came back from the dead by digging their way out of their graves may make you think they are the only ones lucky, there is an unknown characteristic of the movie where it appears that many alive people who die also come back from the dead near instantly. However, they all seem to have a secret mission: to terminate the group of people that returned from the dead.
That was always unclear on why they are so different; however, they look and act the same... mostly.
- Their behaviour will slightly change, which can be a sign for the group to detect and stay safe from those people hunting them. At least they try!
There was a religious mention by a scientist in one scene compared to a known religious event (resurrection of Jesus) that they were not the first to come back from the dead under these conditions. However, this is another sour taste left for the viewers, that even their historical comparison was accurate, they couldn't explain and also didn't unfold the information based on the setting.
The story development - A personal overview
The TV series Glitch will leave more questions unanswered. In Season 3 (last season), one of the characters John Doe, played by Rodger Corser, develops an ability wherein occasions he can see the future events that didn't happen yet. Also, one magical droplet of water floated into the air, exposing the truth to another uninvolved character (physicist) that John met and got a trip to Melbourne.
Oh, spoiler. They managed to break the ionized barrier (or whatever happened), and the characters are free to travel anywhere without any restrictions or the risk to die again.
The storyline turnaround
As a figure of speech, all hell breaks when they find out that the laws of physics are being broken, and the storyline had a massive turnaround. This was when the movie became really interesting, on how the laws of physics are involved and if there is not brought order back (by eliminating everyone who was supposed to be dead), the entire universe will collapse and cease to exist.
Unfortunately, this side of the story appeared late in the movie on the last season and remained unexplored and mostly out the context for the rest of the movie.
My personal opinion is that this side of the story should be part of the movie from early seasons and have more accent put into it.
As far as I am aware, the TV series was cancelled after two seasons, but they decided in 2019 to create a 3rd season in order to finish the story and end the movie with a proper ending, which may be the reason for those new events.
Season 3 is different.
At the end of season 2, John Doe attempted to bring back his love, Dr Elishia, that died (mentioned in the spoiler), however, he was unsuccessful. Instead, two new characters, Tam and Belle, came back from the dead, joining the group and the story.
Although they did not have an impact on the main storyline other than being present among the others, their role added a new series of events and stories throughout season three.
Tam was a Chinese man dead for two hundred years trying to find his descendants, whereas Belle (SPOILER ALERT) is a girl who died young, killed by her own mother in a fanatic religious event she was forcefully part of. Her family consider her to be a demon with further attempts to eliminate her.
During season three, some characters explored the freedom outside Yoorana and connected with other people. Their freedom will not last due to some unforeseen events to follow during the last episodes.
MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT
If you have seen the movie, it's okay to read, but skip the next part if you are planning to watch it.
The ending was emotional where our beloved characters will be persuaded to end their existence by John Doe and others, that their presence there will put an end to the universe. Although they didn't want to take this approach, John did something to convince everyone. |

- In my personal opinion, the movie shouldn't end like this. They put little thought and effort into how their presence really affected the laws of physics, a story that could be continued for at least another season.
- THERE WILL BE NO SEASON 4 OF THE MOVIE.
A fun quiz for those who have seen the movie:
What is the one item present from the beginning, used on episode one, the last episode from season 2 and the last episode of the movie that changed the whole storyline?
My final conclusion
Glitch was a fantastic TV series to watch. Unfortunately, there are only three seasons and each season have only six episodes. There is a lot of drama and action happening, but some questions are left unanswered by the creators of the series that do not fit some events into the storyline well.
The last season kept me awake at night to finish the movie. It is a good TV series to watch in particular if you are a fan of these categories.
Thank you, everyone, for remaining until the end of my review. I appreciate your support!
