Choosing the Right Cat Litter- My Experience With Zeolite

Before I get to talking about cat’s litter I want to express my experience lately peeking over other places and checking out the current trends in pet communities.

When I hangout over instagram or typical social media, among pet owners it seems like there’s always some type of elitism happening too. While there is more awareness and education about how to best care for our cat, sometimes it all boils down to a lot of factors at play. My experience and others' experiences aren’t really the same and it’s not like we don’t take care of our cat properly, just like relationships, sometimes there are different dynamics to it.

In my neighborhood, there are a lot of cats roaming around and though they are feral, you’d be surprised they seem to be well-groomed compared to most indoor cats that I’ve come across. It seems like they just have a better immune system and don’t really need to go vet for tick problems or flu.

Throughout the years, funnily enough the one cat that lived longer in our family is our cat that goes in and out of the house. She lived about 16 years and died of old age. I never took her to the vet because I was still a kid and my parents aren’t so educated about all that. She wasn’t really fed full cat’s food, in fact it was a mix of cat food and partially fish alongside chicken once in a while. Her cat litter was also zeolite, the cheapest that we can find at the pet store.

Then, we paused to have a cat because our family cat passed away until a friend of my mom gave us their cat. This cat lived with us for about 6 years until the flu took over and he passed away.

Enough about my cat story but let’s talk litter!

What type of litter do you use for your cat?

Typically these days there is clumping and non clumping cat litter. There is also one that is overly advertised, tofu cat litter. With so many options out there, you might also wonder, which one is the best for our cat? The answer varies too.

There are several factors that you need to consider before even buying a cat litter such as allergy reaction, environmental factors as well as the cost. Sometimes, these factors even relate to if you’re the type of owner that enjoys following trends. When I was following trends and thought about giving the best for my cat, I learned that my mom might be right all along.

In the past I used bentonite just because everyone used that at their home. My mom likes to buy zeolit, the conventional cat litter over here and the cheapest. It’s apparently a lot better than the other cat litter that I used to buy and it can be recycled. Although for the most part, we don’t really do that.

The reason that I also made the switch is because our cat litter is also close to our water tank and the place is damp. It gave us some problems when they had lice all over and lately, it seems that the sand got all over the place and we’re getting concerned of it clogging our drainage system. So, I eventually made the switch and though it still looks a little weird to me that this type of pebbles are considered safe for cats.
