In my family, none of us have ever thought about using piercings, although we still follow the tradition of piercing the earlobes of girls just after they are born.
But I was the exception. My father adamantly refused, and my submissive mother didn't even ask the nurses to take care of it, as is customary. I don't think they had bought the so-called earring openers to take them to the clinic either.
It was when I was 4 years old, when a cousin of my father, who is also a nurse, arrived with some earrings as a gift for me. They were little Hello Kitty figurines that I loved, of which I only keep one now, because the other one got lost.
The story goes that while the two of them were alone at home, Silvia, the cousin, told my mom to find a needle and that she would pierce my earlobes to put them on, to surprise dad. I remember how painful it was!
In the end, they were the ones surprised when my father, very upset, stopped talking to them for a month!! and the worst part was that both piercings got infected, the earrings stuck to my earlobes with pus, and if putting them on hurt, taking them off tripled the pain.
Now, I don't wear earrings... not because of trauma, but because I believe I don't need them to look feminine.
The piercing that won the country cousin
Being already an adult, a distant cousin decided to visit us in the capital. She lives on a farm in the countryside, and the nearest town to her home is really very basic. It was clear from her face that everything seemed new and wonderful to her. I remember she was afraid of escalators and even though there were many steps, she always chose the traditional ones.
One night, while we were making dinner, we put on music on the radio, and the announcer mentioned a poetry contest to win a surprise prize. Elena, the cousin, wanted to participate and called to recite one she quickly wrote. And to our surprise, she won!
We had to go pick up the prize at a store in a shopping center, and the surprise was that when we arrived at the address it was a piercing and tattoo shop. She only had the birth earrings, so she was hesitant, but she already had won the prize. After talking to the tattoo artist, he convinced her to get a helix piercing, with a beautiful aquamarine earring.

Pero conmigo fue la excepción. Mi padre se negaba rotundamente a ello, y mi madre sumisa ni siquiera pidió a las enfermeras que se encargaran de hacerlo, como es costumbre. Creo que tampoco habían comprado los llamados zarcillos abridores para llevarlos a la clínica.
Fue a los 4 años, cuando una prima de mi padre, quien es también enfermera, llegó con unos zarcillos de regalo para mi. Eran unas figuritas de Hello Kitty que me encantaron, y de las cuales conservo solo una, porque la otra se perdió.
El cuento es que estando ellas dos solas en casa, Silvia, la prima, le dijo a mi mamá que le buscara una aguja y que ella me abriría los orificios para colocarlos, y darle la sorpresa a papá. Recuerdo lo doloroso que fue!
Al final, la sopresa se la llevaron ellas cuando mi padre, muy molesto, dejó de hablarles por un mes!! y lo peor fue, que se me infectaron ambas perforaciones, los zarcillos se pegaron con el pus a mis lóbulos, y si al ponérmelos me había dolido, al sacarlos, el dolor se triplicó.
Ahora, no uso zarcillos... no por trauma, sino que considero que no los necesito para verme femenina.
El piercing que ganó la prima del campo
Siendo ya adulta, una prima lejana decidió ir a visitarnos en la capital. Ella vive en una hacienda en el interior del país, y el poblado más cercano a su casa, es realmente muy básico. En su rostro se veía que todo le parecía novedoso y maravilla. Recuerdo que le tenía temor a las escaleras mecánicas y aunque fueran muchos escalones, siempre se iba por las tradicionales.
Una noche, mientras hacíamos la cena, pusimos música en la radio, y el locutor anuncia un concurso de poesía para ganarse un premio sorpresa. Elena, la prima, quiso participar y llamó para decir una que escribió rápidamente. Y pasó lo que menos esperábamos: ganó!
Debiamos ir por el premio a una tienda en un centro comercial, y la sorpresa fue que al llegar a la dirección era una tienda de piercings y tatuajes. Ella solo tenía los aretes del nacimiento, así que no se animaba, pero ya tenía el premio. Luego de hablarle el tatuador, la terminó convenciendo de hacerse un hélix, con un arete aguamarina que le quedaba muy lindo.

En el camino de regreso a casa, sólo pensaba qué diría su padre cuando volviera, pero ella tenía ya 42 años!!
