Hey there, Hive!✨

Most likely you, dear reader, already know this story or have the slightest idea of what it is about. For a long time it has been said that this is a story of tragic romance, framing the protagonist couple as something that could be aspired to in romantic relationships. Well, I consider that Romeo and Juliet has very little romance, so it should not be praised in that aspect.

I have several points to criticize regarding this work and that is what I want to share with you in this post, in which I will give spoilers.

Synopsis

Work written by William Shakespeare in 1597, it tells the tragic story of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, both children of two families that maintain a great enmity, to the point that third parties have had to intercede so that they can somehow maintain the peace between each other. Among the family members they reach an agreement that if one were to break the tranquility of the other, the offense would be repaid with death.

This enmity doesn't matter to the young Romeo and Juliet, so when they meet and fall madly in love at first sight, they decide to do everything possible to be together. No matter what it costs, they will not be able to live without each other. This will lead to a series of unfortunate situations that end up in a heartbreaking outcome...

Misunderstand the work

This story is told as a tragedy, although the author mixes it with comedy elements of the time in order to generate greater tension and emotional impact when the saddest parts are read. Here we have the key word in this story, tragedy. Although there is a spontaneous and apparently innocent love, this is not a romance story, that is not the central element but rather something secondary.

The love between Romeo and Juliet is simply the instrument that serves to narrate a story of irrational enmity that leads two families to experience unfortunate situations, which later helps them reconsider their actions. They had their reasons for acting as they did, but all their misunderstandings were exaggerated to the point of preventing them from living in peace, doing everything possible to harm the other instead of truly trying to solve things peacefully.

Being volatile, irrational and spiteful only led them to experience a tragedy that would make them all bad. Their fights led them to a loss greater than their pride, their own children.

This is how over so many years people have misinterpreted this story since the message at no time was “love is the greatest thing and you will be with your partner until death do you part”, but rather it was intended to point out how absurd and incredibly damaging excessive pride can be.

Why did readers focus on the couple? I suppose because of the tendency to romanticize behaviors that, although they seem appropriate, are actually the worst thing we can do, but even so they became normalized out of ignorance. I mean the love between Romeo and Juliet is toxic, there should be no other way to describe it.

To begin with, that thing about love at first sight and immediately being willing to give your entire life to that person, to literally wanting to die to be with the other... I'm sorry, but I think that even for the time it is something incredibly exaggerated and irrational. They didn't even know each other, it's ridiculous to think that such a deep bond could emerge overnight. There was no love there, there was a whim and rebellion of two quite immature characters who were barely experiencing life.

And one of my biggest problems with this story is the romanticization of suicide, seeing it as a tool to get what you want, as a perfectly acceptable way, and that someone would be willing to commit it for "an act of love". Needless to say, this idea is immensely harmful since many people may come to think that a bond of emotional dependence with a partner ends exclusively in death, which is completely false.

Of course, all of this is clear in the novel, Shakespeare in no line implies that this is okay, but perhaps it is because of the drama as well as the strong emotions evoked with the tragedy that people felt moved and misunderstood everything. That is precisely what I regret with this work, that the message has been lost and that sometimes it is difficult to appreciate the work for what it is, a tragic drama.

Viewed this way, it is an entertaining story because Shakespeare's prose is beautiful, easy and interesting to read. The sad emotions are strong and clear, just as the message is forceful for a society in which similar stories probably abounded.

What William wrote, regardless of what is popularly interpreted, is really excellent

Speaking of the work per se, Juliet, despite being impulsive, is a fairly innocent teenager, which makes her endearing to a certain extent, but it is true that she is overly naive. For his part, Romeo seems insufferable to me, a gallant who was simply looking for a woman (any woman) to get through his spite for Rosaline's rejection. Although I have to admit that this whim is loaded with passion, which is an element of love that can easily be pleasant to read, but thinking that it is the only thing that is needed in a relationship is a serious mistake.

Regarding the Montague and Capulet families, they are the characters that are best developed, because as the story focuses on that feud, it becomes evident how wrong everyone is and all the mistakes they make that lead them to the horrible end. They are hateful but that was the intention.

It is a very well-made tragedy by the renowned playwright, but unfortunately it was poorly understood in general, perpetuating certain and quite harmful stereotypes that would mark romance in general art. If read with this in mind, it can be an entertaining and easy-to-read book, but erasing the inadequate fame from this story will be nearly impossible.

¡Hola, Hive!✨

Ahhhh. Thank you. We did Romeo & Juliet at school when I was about 13. Back then I did not have the tools to identify why I disliked the tale. In the years since I have developed them. Your critique of the tale is well constructed and an enjoyable read.

I'm fully of the opinion that this is a play which should be left until tertiary education where time can be fully spent on not just the text, but a proper examination of how a translation in current English would read, what allusions and references people of the time would understand, and how it fits as a critique of romantic ideals.

The play may be the thing, but it is not everything and it's high time this play stopped being presented as a highlight of romantic idealism.

Oh I totally agree with you! This should be a tale appreciated by the writing and the translation with educational purposes. In that sense, the story is incredible. But to think that this is a remarkable love story is a huge mistake, sadly made by way too many people.

As you said, that romantic idealism has disappeared slowly over the years but there's still some of it, so that's way it's better to talk about it more.

Thank you so much for reading and for your lovely comment 💕

You found it R&J romantic or sad? For me is a introspective of the time it was written... Meaning, a new update for Greek tragedies in the classic literature with a little bit of English overview...

It's sad, not romantic at all. People misinterpreted it and that's the biggest issue with this story. It was more of an exploration of the English literature back then and a direct criticism of the violence in some cultures, although the introspection you mentioned is an interesting point of view about it

Indeed. A new vision for tragedies, but with no incest on it. Just a sad relationship between two idealistic, yet young couple of teenagers.

By the way, @mandysmoon if you could, you should take a look to my newest post. I think it would fit on you.

Oh absolutely! I'll look it up :)

Awesome review! I couldn't agree more: in this play the romance fantasy is blown completely out of proportions, for which I always thought that it was supposed to be some kind of parody of the teenage perspective. This is why I thought that the film adaptation with a young DiCaprio was perfect for this.

I don't know if it applied to you too, but for many people the first love tends to stir such earth-shattering emotions that the whole 'die-for-you' craze may become dead serious. For me this wasn't the case when I was 13, I only WISHED that I had someone I could die for, or burn the city down, or do some other type of insane act. (Maybe it was for the better this way.)

As far as the story goes, I think another factor is that these young characters were constantly surrounded by death and violence. So their own actions were rather benign in comparison. In fact, I started seeing and hearing interesting parallels from contemporary teens as the Covid pandemic was at its height. Strange, but in a way understandable...

Hello there! I totally agree with you. That's why critics say that it has hints of comedy within it, not only for creating a contrast and make the tragedy more impactful, but for also point out a parody of love and what it should not be. People misinterpreted it based on inadequate behaviors and who am I to blame them? Society back then was way different. But nowadays is important to realize that normalizing that kind of "love" is the most toxic and harmful thing that can be done.

I think that your first love experience was actually the best that could happen, you had a certain feeling, some ideas that never actually became true and it's better that way. For me, maybe because of my own culture and experience, I knew what it was like to "die for someone" based on others experience, and I actually hate it so much that those ideas never crossed my mind when I met a boy when I was 13-14, and thank God for that.

But there I see what you mentioned about Romeo and Juliet being surrounded by violence and doing what they thought was normal, because context has a very big influence on your actions, so it's not surprising that people, especially young teenagers, do certain things without realizing the impact it can have on their life.

Thank you so much for your comment and taking the time to read my post!

This just shows how we tend to want what we don't have. Growing up in Germany, I was aware of the chaotic passion that characterizes so many aspects of Latin American culture, yet it was as far away for me as the Shakespearean play (or the film version I keep mentioning, and now I really feel like watching it again). Maybe this explains why I ended up moving to Mexico, and now I am happily married to a Mexican. Ironically, both of us tend to be the cool, rational minds in a world of heated passion.

Yes, I totally agree with you. Depending on the cultural background of a person they can build a certain idea about any form of art, interpreting things the way they think is right. Therefore this story, such as many others, can be interpreted as a romance very easily just as you say, by heated and way too passionate people.

But when you read or watch this from another perspective, more close to the original point of view, then you'll realize that the message was something totally different.
