Campaign Trail Intensifies

Local government elections are in full swing in the City of Melton and one of the key candidates running for re-election is my partner, Ashleigh Vandenberg who is seeking a second term on the council. This election has been marked by a groundswell of support, evident in the small yet powerful gestures of community members swapping out their candidate coreflutes for hers. This wave of enthusiasm reflects not only her previous achievements but also the trust she has cultivated in the community during her first term.

In her first term, my partner brought fresh perspectives and energy to the council working diligently on issues that mattered to the residents of Melton. From advocating for improved infrastructure and public services to addressing environmental sustainability, her hands-on approach has left an impact. She made it a point to engage with residents, listen to their concerns and translate those into actionable policies.

One key aspect of her campaign is her accessibility. Throughout her first term, she held regular community meetings, attended events and maintained an open door policy, ensuring that residents had a direct line to their elected representative. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the growing support for her re-election campaign is a testament to the positive changes she has helped implement in Melton.

Election Heats Up

As the local government election period ramps up, it’s clear that the support for her candidacy has only grown stronger. In neighbourhoods across Melton, residents are swapping out their existing coreflutes for her campaign signs. This small yet powerful gesture is not only symbolic of the faith people have in her but also shows the grassroots nature of her campaign. Unlike larger political races where big money advertising plays a dominant role, local elections rely heavily on word-of-mouth and community endorsements. The willingness of residents to publicly display their support in their yards speaks volumes about her connection to the community.

It’s not just about coreflutes the campaign has witnessed an increase in volunteers eager to assist in various aspects from door-knocking to distributing flyers at local events. Many of these volunteers are first time campaigners, drawn by her vision for the city and her approachable demeaner. This grassroots engagement is reflective of a candidate who doesn’t just promise change but has already demonstrated her ability to effect it.

Long Term Growth

Like any election, this one comes with its challenges. The City of Melton, like many growing suburban areas, faces issues around urban development, infrastructure expansion, and public service management. During her first term, my partner made it clear that long term planning and sustainable growth are essential to maintaining the character and quality of life in Melton. She worked to ensure that development projects were carefully assessed, taking into account the needs of the community and the environment.

However, with rapid population growth comes increased pressure on local services schools, healthcare, public transportation and recreational facilities. These issues have become central talking points in this election. As a sitting council member, she has used her experience to propose balanced solutions that prioritise both growth and sustainability. Her ability to handle these complex issues has earned her the respect of her peers and has resonated with voters who understand the importance of thoughtful governance.

People Power

The community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents often share stories of how she has personally helped address local issues, from organising important events to facilitating quick responses to infrastructure concerns like potholes or street lighting. For many, her personal approach to governance is what sets her apart from other candidates.

One resident commented, "She’s always around when we need her. It doesn’t matter how small the issue is whether it's something as simple as rubbish collection or bigger things like traffic management she listens, and she acts." This level of involvement has earned her the trust of those who were previously indifferent to local elections.

Another element that has drawn support is her stance on environmental conservation. Over the past few years, Melton has seen increased interest in sustainability and she has been a vocal advocate for green policies, including improving local parks, increasing tree planting efforts and promoting renewable energy initiatives. Her commitment to a greener future resonates with many younger voters and families who are keen on preserving the area’s natural beauty.

But, this race isn't over yet and there is still a lot of work for her to do.

Good luck!
