January cold.

in #hive-1439611 months ago

When outdoor temps are well below 0°, minus 23C this morning, the water in the spring is so much warmer than the air temperature that the ducks and geese that congregate there are often enveloped in a cloud of steam.

I was trying to capture the rising clouds of steam, but I need to work on my video skills!

Clouds of steam reflecting the rising

The bird feeders have been empty for a few days, but my daughter came by last night and shoveled a small path on the deck and filled two of the feeders. The birds are so much happier this morning. Poor things

When the river is iced over, bald eagles often come to fish in the open water. They land in the treetops and suddenly dive in and grab a fish. I haven't seen any yet this winter, but it is really entertaining to watch.

And of course I couldn't resist taking a photo of these tree shadows! Winter really is beautiful to look at through the windows, as long as I can stay indoors and avoid the cold.

Sort:

Woah! I'm not sure that I've ever seen that steam effect before, that's pretty wild. I was tempted to go outside and try that "toss boiling water into the air and make snow" thing, but I goggled what temp it needs to be for that to work and it needed to be even colder than the sub zeros we already had. Brr!

We did that once... It worked but was not dramatic enough to continue staying out in the cold for long. ❄️

I hope you are able to cope with the extremely cold weather over there. In my region we are presently battling high temperatures and the heat is just unbearable. It's a sign the harmattan is making way for the rainy season. Have a great day and I wish you the best.

Inside my house is warm, and I'm thankful I don't have to go outside! Hope you find ways to survive the heat!

Bird hot tub 😜 nice snow on trees and shadows on snow photos. We finally put up our bird feeders and they have been packed 🙂 I didn't realize how much I missed them.

I love how much life the bird feeders bring to an otherwise dead winter scene!

Be careful in that cold! Way too cold for my blood! At least the birds are happy again with the feeders refilled. That's very cool steam coming off of the river. Make sure to bundle up out there!

Uff, the photos just radiate cold. Very nice photos. Be careful, because you should not get ill. 😎

I'm always counting the days until winter ends. It is my least favorite season.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is awful -10 and snow will start in the early morning... we'll see :)

Here in our city the temperature is five degrees and people are not tolerating it because our city is known for its heat and this time the 100-year record has been broken and it is so cold. All these pictures looks so beautiful.

We have winter gear and are prepared for the cold. I'm sure it is hard for the people there.

Yeah you are right.

Sunshine is more valuable in winters and looks attractive.

Most of our winter skies are overcast with clouds, so sunshine in the winter is treasured!

Birds in the fog on the water are something!👍

Usually it is Canadian geese and mallard duck that are down there in the spring water. I would love to have you here to take photos!

¡Extraordinariamente hermoso!

Thanks!

Omg! I can't imagine how cold this must feel. The closest cold I've experienced first hand is when I open our freezer.... Haha. I guess it still not that cold compared to this Ms. Melinda.
It's all bright and sunny here on my side of the earth.
These are awesome photos, I love the one with the branches and the sun beaming as the backdrop plus the birds feeding on their feeders with frozen ice.

You are right..., refrigerator freezer temperatures are several degrees warmer than it is outside right now! Glad you enjoyed the photos!

Grrrr I am cold looking at your pictures. We are here in the Pholippines. Have not experienced snow, but I wish to hold a snow. But, looking at your pictures I think my knees could not stand the cold.

You would definitely need a long down filled coat, fleece lined hat and gloves, a scarf around your neck to pull up over your nose and mouth, and boots rated for sub 0 weather! 🥶🧊

I just imagine how cold it is going out there. But thats life, even how cold going out but still we need to continue our day to day activities. It's interesting to see birds catching out for fish in the water.

I'm thankful I don't have to go out often!

Beautiful images, I am in awe of such beauty.

Imágenes hermosas, estoy maravillado con tanta belleza.

I'm glad you can enjoy winter through my photos! I suspect that if you were here you would not enjoy it as much!

The photos of the steam on the water looks like a science fiction movie, good thing your daughter took care of the birds, they will remember her, it seems unbelievable but they know who takes care of them, have a friend who have told me how macaws come to her balcony every morning and she can differentiate them on the way each behave, like some how they remember and recognize who take care of them

They do recognize the 'feeder person'! I have some that come to the window and shout at me when the feeder is empty.

jajajaja yeah they do start making all kind of noises demanding 😂

It must be really cold over there but we are in our hot season here though
Sometimes I wonder if birds are not cold
It feels they are always comfortable under the cold

They seem to be able to tolerate the cold. They do eat more during the cold weather.

Wow, this is a paradise! Beautiful landscapes. ❤️

Yes friend, these photos are from the bay of Pampatar on the Margarita island

Ahhh! Blue and green. I miss those colors. Thanks so much for sending me this island warmth! ❤️

Wave Media

I wish you could enjoy these beautiful landscapes here on the island, but at least I can send you some photos

I didnt knew that in extreme cold conditions duck and geese find solace in small ponds as the water is warm there wow.

Most of the water has iced over, but the ducks and geese love this warmer spring water.
