A new way of seeing life with empathy [EN/PT]

in #hive-153850yesterday

Volunteering in an action that can help other people is a great thing and an immense opportunity for personal growth. As well as making us better human beings, volunteering teaches us valuable lessons about life. There are experiences that only volunteer work can provide, being a genuine way of showing love for others and cultivating empathy within us.

It's been a few years since I last took part in more solid voluntary work. In that time, I've had a few minor participations, but one action that profoundly marked my life was when I volunteered to administer vaccines to the pets of low-income people in the poorest neighborhoods of the city where I live. This experience undoubtedly changed my way of thinking and helped me become the person I am today.

It all started when I was in the military and a campaign came to my barracks asking for volunteers to learn how to administer vaccines to animals. Hardly anyone volunteered, and the campaign had only a few people, despite the high demand. As soon as I heard about it, I volunteered. Unfortunately, not many did, as both the training and the campaign would take place over the following weekends. Many didn't want to give up rest, as the military routine was heavy and time with the family was scarce. Even so, I decided to get involved and try something new, and it was a decision that changed the way I thought.

I had always disliked doctors' surgeries, hospitals and anything that involved blood, syringes or similar procedures. I had a certain nervousness about it. The training took place at the municipal kennel, where many homeless or abandoned dogs were cared for. I had to learn how to vaccinate and, frankly, I was a bit scared, as I had no skills or experience in this area. However, after some instruction and practice, I managed to overcome my initial nervousness and met my first challenge.

After a few weeks, the big day arrived. I was assigned to a poor neighborhood and spent around 10 hours on my feet, administering vaccines to dogs and cats in the area, together with a team of veterinary nurses. I had no idea how many animals there could be in one place! It was hours and hours of giving vaccinations, being scratched by cats and bitten by some dogs who were more fearful and desperate than me. But in the end, it was all worth it.

The feeling of having done good and helped families who didn't have the means, or even the awareness, to care for their animals was gratifying. I believe that, at the end of the day, I was the biggest beneficiary of this story, because helping others makes us great, makes us better people and helps us see life from a new perspective.

Whenever I can, I try to help other people, even indirectly. Empathy became more intense in me after that day. Even if it's not always through volunteer work, it's become part of my way of seeing who needs help. I believe that this is a way of being grateful for what we have and of evolving as people.

volunteering is such a good way to also take a step outside of the stuff that you already knew. Just like you did....heading to the vet when you have no experience in all of these medical things. But why not...they need hands and it is also good to see another field and create more empathy for whatever is going on in that field.

Love it.

Wow! That sounds really nice. It's great to help others, especially animals. When we do good things for others, it makes us feel happy and good inside. It's like getting a big hug from the heart. Helping others also teaches us to be kind and caring, and it helps us see the world in a better way.
