When a baby is born, it completely changes a couple's life. The routine changes, the way of thinking changes, the household chores, which are already many, become even more intense, and now there is a little person who needs constant care. The first few days, or rather the first few months, are a phase of adaptation for both the mother and the father. For the mother, a few months of maternity leave are available, which is fair enough, after all, a newborn is totally dependent on maternal care, and basically all her time is dedicated to this new role. For the father, however, the leave is only a few days and sometimes not even that. Is this fair?
Here in Brazil, by law, fathers have five days' leave to spend with their children from the day they are born. Some companies can extend this period by up to 20 days, but this is not compulsory. This time is significantly less than that granted to the mother, suggesting that five days would be enough for the father. Although the mother's role in the birth of a baby is undeniably important, this does not mean that the father's role is inferior. I don't believe that this period is satisfactory for the father.
Think about it: the presence of a father for a longer period means that the mother's effort will be shared. If the father figure is present, this can lighten the mother's load, the more exhausting tasks can be divided up, and most importantly, this time together will turn into a bond with the child. Normally, the mother and baby already have this bond, but the father still needs to build it, and this should be done from the very first days.
If the father had a little more time, it would mean less effort for the mother, more dedication to the family and more willingness to enjoy this important moment. With the work routine, if you're away from home all day and come back tired, your body and mind are exhausted and you won't be able to rest at home. Even so, it is necessary to relieve the mother who has spent the whole day with her child or to help with the tasks that remain unfinished. Of course, at some point this will have to happen, but having some initial time to enjoy this new life at home, spend time with the family and take care of this fragile being that you love so much, would be a great gift and a unique privilege.
A father doesn't need six months like a mother, but it wouldn't be unfair for him to have at least a month of total dedication to this new phase of life. Mothers are extremely important, there's no doubt about that, but we mustn't forget how important a father is in a child's life. Reducing this bond early on in life is not the best solution. With more time for the father, everyone wins in this dynamic: the mother will have less of a burden until she adapts and restores her strength, the child will have care and a bond being built, and the father will be happy to be able to spend more time with his new love!
