Hey, Everybody! What's good? My best friend is in town for the weekend and texts me yesterday with, "down to make some hash?" I've had to give up weed because it keeps me awake all night, no matter what strain or strength I've tried, but I'm always excited to learn all I can about growing and producing.
So my friend, who I'll call, uh... Doofenschmirtz, has been growing since we were in about the 7th Grade and is the most knowledgeable person I know on everything cannabis. He's gone out of his way to find the most interesting strains, cross and re-cross them, grow them organically, grow them profitably indoors, and also grow them outside in our boreal environment/short season. I'm really quite lacking in my weed knowledge, but Doof knows his shit.
Here are some highlights from our adventure yesterday.
We started off with trimmings from Doof's last harvest before he moved and quit growing, party store ice, water, bubble bags like what you'd find here, a big trash can, and a power drill with a paint mixer attachment.
Then we dumped the trimmings/ice into the top bag in the can, added about enough water so that we could just see it start to appear under the top of the ice, and let the trimmings sit for about twenty minutes to get saturated before we got to mixing. We then drilled around and around, deep and shallow (but without getting too close to the bag's sides and bottom) for about 30/45 minutes before letting everything settle for the first break.
It's also worth noting that should you choose to try this at home, don't be dumbasses like us and use a cordless drill instead. Lol. Doof's was still at his new place. The upshot of using batteries, besides the lack of electrocution, is that you're constantly charging them and getting auto settling breaks built in to the mixing process.
It starts off pretty clunky and slow to move around, but you'll see further down that as the ice breaks down everything starts spinning like crazy. Doof's still not sure if more hash comes off during this first phase of mixing, or during the end when you can really spin everything. In either case, the more time you spend beating everything around, the more product you'll end up with.

So ^ this shot is over an hour after the one above. All told we mixed for ~90 minutes. Probably not quite long enough to extract everything we could have, but it was also cold AF yesterday.
Next up, we begin draining the bags. Bag #1, the green bag, is in place to hold all of the thick, twiggy, leafy, icy nastiness and only let the hash through. The orange bag is has a finer screen at the bottom and holds the first layer of hash - rougher, less pure, but still hash.
Here, we're rinsing down the inside of the orange bag to collect all of its hash at the bottom. Scoop it all out and you have it. Below, we have the results.
Now comes the really good stuff! Exact same process. Drain, rinse, collect, and scoop out.
I also never got a good shot, but you can just make out that this last bag is now suspended from the ceiling by ropes/harness etc. Doing this makes draining much easier as the bag screen's so fine the water takes forever to seep out.

Then it's just a matter of letting them dry.
And there you have it! Organic, outdoor grown, chemical free bubble hash. Plus, if you have your best friend to make it with like I did, a lot of great conversation and catching up tossed in on top. I hope you all enjoyed sharing my experience yesterday as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you.
