Around 300 million years ago, dragonflies were among the first winged insects to evolve. Some of the fossils of them have shown wingspans measuring up to two feet. Modern day dragonflies have a wingspan of around 2–5 inches. They require standing bodies of water for reproduction yet can mate in midair, connecting to their partner as they fly around.
They have a series of small hairs and claws that let them cling to different surfaces; this one is fully vertical on a wall about 3 stories up. They can often rest like this for hours, and on a hot summer day, that's when you will most commonly see them in this more docile state.
