This was an early spring squirrel, possibly an adolescent, that was hoping around my front lawn. They are also known as black squirrels and they are descended from a group that escaped from the Calgary zoo in the 1930s. They have been in every neighborhood I have lived in or visited my whole life, so in the last 90 years I would say they have become almost prolific.
