I have seen this trend in the last few years with the new mothers that they completely avoid sweet and salt for their infants till the age of one. It is a very good practice is what I believe and very healthy for the baby also. The baby's gut at that stage is still developing and it is ideal to keep the baby away from all unhealthy foods. The babies' bones are developing in that stage and excess sodium in salt can hinder that progress, and sugar will disturb their sleep patterns, hamper their teething process and lead to obesity. Every part of the baby is developing and hence the diet at that stage is very crucial , which is the mother's milk and then as the baby becomes 6 months old can gradually start with soft foods.
What amuses me in this whole process is that while they avoid till the age of 1, after that when they are introduced to other foods there is a free hand. I have quite a few small children in my circle between the age group of 2 to 6 and I see that they have all the possible wrong foods like donuts, burgers, pizza and all of that junk. You give a healthy diet for one year and then you mess it up, how does that work. The body of a child keeps developing till their teenage and even after that, so while we may not completely avoid the sugar but there has to be a total control on it too. Mac Donalds at any given time is filled with children, same goes for Dunkin Donuts.
One more thing I noticed is that when the baby starts with soft foods, mothers also get these ready food bottles for them, which mentions no sugar and no salt, but then what about preservatives, how can they miss that part of it. A bottled food can never happen without a preservative, else it will not have a shelf life. A lot of things are being done by just following social media, if some group of people say it's right, we start believing it's right and like wise.
Times are changing and new ways will flow in, but one also has to put good sense in all decision making, whether it is till one year or after that. This is the foundation stage for them, and they do not understand what is good for them and what is not. They will make fuss for getting things but it's the parents who have to take those hard calls and do what is best for them.
