Employee Engagement activity is one of the most integral parts of any Organization, be it big or small. In big corporates these are some very well defined and set processes like a good reward and recognition system, training and development, employee events and so on. But in smaller offices not much importance is given to engagement. When I took up HR work for this particular office, there was absolutely nothing around engagement. It is more of a home business type of environment so importance is not given on these things. The staff strength is 30 employees and most of them have been working in this office for a minimum of 7 to 8 years.
When I took up contract of managing HR for this Company, I took a pulse of the Organization as to where were they in terms of Employee satisfaction at work place. The results were not very good. The one common feedback was they were getting into a monotony. Yes, when there is all work, work and no time to play then it happens like this. The employees never did anything in office except for working from 9 to 6 at their work stations. They clearly lacked motivation to do their jobs. There was nothing for them to look forward to. I would also see that hardly people talked to each other and all the time they looked stressed. There was no team work, they would keep finding faults with one another.
I started with some initiatives to lighten up their mood at work. We started organizing Birthday cake cutting celebrations, a game of Tambola once a week, monthly one outing, festival celebrations. Gradually the mood in the office was changing. At least they all started talking to each other, started working as a team. That was one step forward for me. Then I started with some instant motivation initiatives to boost their productivity at work. This was quite a hit as they started looking forward to those little gifts. We started appreciating people on daily basis, this really worked well for them.
We all need appreciation time to time to keep us motivated. Salary is always there but, truly speaking, that does not ever motivate employees enough to work because it's a regular affair. When there is something additional for them on the table then that becomes one good level of motivation for them. After all we are working with people who are filled with all the possible emotions and it is important to take care of these emotions.
These small giveaways, token of appreciation, make a very big difference in the productivity of an employee. Large organizations have very good systems in place for this. Rather there is a whole team working on it, but smaller organizations often overlook this part and they start taking their employees for granted which is not correct. Your work place is a place where you spend more time sometimes than your home also. So, if that is not healthy then even you are not healthy.
A Healthy motivated work place brings out the best in the Employees and they help the Organizations grow positively.
