In the late 90s when Mobile phones were introduced to common man, it was a big thing. The phones were bulky, the charges to use them were high, there were no smart phones, and it was only used for calling and SMS which made life much simpler in terms of communication. As times progressed lot of enhancements happened and the smart phones were introduced. And once that happened since then gradually our life has started completely revolving around these smart phones. It kind of follows us everywhere, even for people who do not use them much, they too still carry them when they step out of their home.
Till 10 years back I remember on all our holidays we carried a separate camera and some years before that we would also carry a separate video recorder. That would get bulky for the handbag as well. But now there is no need for all of those, unless you are a photographer and yes, nothing can beat a DSLR . The latest iPhone and even the Androids give a very good picture clarity, so for majority of the people it becomes convenient. Nowadays when I travel, I barely see few people carrying a separate camera, else majority of the people are on their Smart phones. The Camera industry I cannot say is completely killed, but for sure the demand has gone down considerably. Smart phones give options of Video recording, Selfies and a lot of picture enhancement options, so it becomes a demandable product and also the convenience to carry.
The other effected industry is the book industry. Though I am still a strong fan of hard-copy but majority of the people like to go with the soft-copy, as there is no hassle to carry something separately.
The major effected industries are the Torch companies and the Alarm clocks. These are the industries that are the most impacted. Nowadays I do not see anyone using either of the two. I am sure there are people who still would be using it but the number would be too little. Things like Calendars, Calculators, wrist watches all of these are impacted.
In the days when there were no smart phones with GPS, when we would do a road journey to an unknown destination, I would plan out the root on the map of that place and carry the map along. Now again there is no need for that as well. These industries have not completely been killed as yet but majority of the people have shifted to their one gadget which is all in one use and convenient to carry. And with time I am sure there will be developments and the smart phones will also become a thing of the past. The growth of AI is taking life altogether to new higher levels.
Somewhere I liked the old traditional ways, and I still use some of them. But, yes, to be honest for convenience purpose I too go along with the smart phone use, specially when I am travelling. When I am not then I go with my old ways in day-to-day home life. Like I use a paper calendar and an alarm clock.
10 years down the line, the new generation may see these things probably in museums :-)
