Investing in Tomorrow: Empowering Young Minds

As a child, I didn’t have anyone to tell me how to do things aside my parents. I have an elder brother and sister but at that time, we were all young and going about our daily activities. In school, it was just our teachers and peers. From crèche up till junior high, the only people I had to guide me were my parents and sometimes some of my family members. But mostly, I had to figure things out on my own.

When I came into the outside world, I met so many people and the shock of this all was that I found out most of my age mates didn’t know what they were up to. That was in the university. I knew what I wanted to study in the university, what extracurricular activities I wanted to take part in and all of that. But most of my mates were just there because everyone was there and they were just going with the flow. I couldn’t wrap my head around it.

I had this friend who wasn’t even sure of the course he wanted to study. He was studying a general course so he could decide what to study in second year when we were all required to part ways to our various specialties. I for one didn’t have anyone to tell me what to study in the university and all of that but the internet did teach me a lot. I don’t know about my mates but I’d like to assume most students leaving high school to the tertiary institutions and the outside world don’t really know what’s happening out there.

And so, my little way of giving back to our younger ones and empowering them is to give these students what myself and most of my mates didn’t get to experience which is, guidance and career development sessions. Here, I managed to get a team of like minded individuals on board and we kick started this project, especially in the rural communities here in the northern part of Ghana. I didn’t grow up here and so I had little idea on how things were around here when I first arrived. But with time, I came to realize the situation and hand and today, we are giving back to our younger ones, empowering the next generation of leaders.

It might not be much, but that’s our little way of helping out because you never know how far this sessions would take these students. What’s your way of empowering the next generation?
