I wouldn’t say forgetfulness is really my thing but I’ve had issues with people in my life who experience forgetfulness. No one is perfect and that’s totally okay. But sometimes, we need to pay extra attention to details so as to not forget when things need to be done.
It doesn’t always have to be a big thing. Forgetting even the pettiest of things can have a long lasting effect on you or others. Sometime ago, the house I’m currently living in almost got burnt because one of the tenants kept beans on fire and forgot about it. She fell asleep and the food was on fire from 9pm till almost midnight. As someone who doesn’t sleep early, I could see smoke in my room and I wondered what was happening. I stepped out only to realise the whole house was covered in smoke with the smell of burnt food.
The next minute, some other tenants also came out and we began to search for the source of the smoke. In a few minutes, we managed to wake her up and get her to turn the stove off. This was a really narrow escape for us because if we hadn’t realised this earlier, no one knows what would have happened to us in the house. Forgetfulness isn’t something I’d wish on even my worst enemies cos its effects are always dire.
Even though I always make sure to have a plan for the day, not every minute of my day is covered sometimes and yes, I do forget some stuff also. There was this one time being forgetful affected me and my job so much that I vowed to pay extra attention to stuff. So, apparently we had an exam to conduct for our students and I was informed about it a week ahead. On a normal day, we have all our exams on Fridays but this time it was scheduled for a Thursday.
Thursday came and I totally forgot about the exam. I slept until around 7am before I woke up and I had to be there at around 5:30am to set up and get things ready since the exam was scheduled for 6:00am. I woke up and hurriedly rushed to the venue. Unfortunately for me, we were short on staff and so my coming late affected the whole schedule since the exam had to be shifted a few hours forward.
My boss wasn’t happy at all and I also felt bad because this act of forgetfulness affected my whole day and that of others also. Someone might see it to be a normal oversight but over here it’s not. Time is very important and we are required to heed to it to avoid any mix up. This happened during the time I first started working here and so everything was quite new to me. But that doesn’t excuse what happened.
I would say over the months, I’ve worked tirelessly to avoid such a situation at work, promoting a safe and open working environment for everyone. One thing I learnt from this event is that, everything is important and paying attention to details would take you far. I hope you enjoyed reading this, thank you for your time.
