Just Need To Remember To Be Patient For The Next Job...

I almost fell in to a "new job trap" earlier.

This is a phrase I've just made up but it's something I've fallen prey to before where I'm at the end of my BS tolerance with the current role and would seriously have taken anything to get out. In other words, letting emotion get the better of my career decisions... again!

However, as I was on the phone to a recruiter who found a "new job" earlier, I could feel the conversation was more driven by them looking to get a commission on getting me to move, rather than me wanting the role.

I don't know if you've ever felt that whole "this isn't for me" during one of those conversations but I knew pretty quickly that, well... it wasn't for me but I wanted to entertain the idea and see if I could convince myself.

Maybe it was just the numbing effects of the day job stopping me from feeling as much zest as the recruitment agent.

Or perhaps previous experience of diving in to a new job on emotion, from a job a recruiter found, which ended up being a horror show (although ultimately lead me to travel in 2019)...

As I write these words now, it's revealed to me that because it's not a role that I've gone out and actively sought myself, it didn't have that "wow" factor.

The motivation hadn't come from within but instead was external... and that then makes it very hard to convince yourself to "love" the idea of xyz job when it wasn't you who chose it.

When I went on a career workshop last September, it showed me that picking your life values that are most reflected in your current job is the way to go, rather than ticking boxes on a job spec.

It takes time to narrow down what you want to do but exploring options isn't a bad move either, as long as they are low risk such as speaking to people on the phone, reaching out on linkedin and little things like that to grow your network.

Something tells me that this year could be huge with a career change but I'm still going to keep probing.

It's only been 4 months but I just need to remember to patient, there's still plenty of sand left in the hourglass...

I'm not sure if anyone can relate to this rant but it helped me sort some thoughts out anyway!

Hey there. Thanks for the reminder! I'll join the server and see what's going on

Oh yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with recruiters. Honestly, it's just as difficult on the hiring side as they start throwing everyone they can find at you as the perfect candidate.

My first ever "real" job was obtained via the help of a recruiter, and for that I will be thankful because it kicked off an entire career, with the ups and downs any career has. Yet, now in my career, I find I get more than a little irked when a recruiter contacts me with "a hot job offer" when it's obvious all they did was look at keywords.

My advice to you? Be happy. Something will come along that will knock your socks off, and it'll be worth the wait.

Yeah I have a few mailing lists I'm on and set up alerts but sometimes when it seems there's a match "job spec" wise, the values of the company don't match with your own. I often check sights like glassdoor which are great to see how employees find working there. Usually the truth lies somewhere in between all the reviews.

That's great you had success with a recruiter that put you on a good path!

Thanks for the advice too, that's definitely the ultimate goal and happiness is a mindset that we can choose to have - something will definitely come along this year!

That's my last year, had to get out at all costs, but now I can see it was more of an emotional effect followed by the changes in the company. And you are so right, these recruiters would do anything to get you in and pay their bill. The funny thing, you see the same jobs advertised on the company websites, so you can apply without the constant pressure from the recruiter, cutting this unnecessary noise.

I'm sorry to hear that you were brought down that much that you had to just leave no matter what. I've done the same thing in a previous job and although the lack of income hit, I felt healthier.

I could easily do the same thing now and have been close but I think I'm dealing with the shit a lot more because I can see a way out and am working towards it. Also thinking of the day when I can just send the most glorious of middle fingers when I do leave keeps some sunshine in lol!

Very good point about the jobs boards. I think when you move from job to job via that method, you'll often end up in the same situation as it's more of a case of these job listings simply "being there" and you take whatever. When you find a company that matches with your life values, that is worth exploring for sure :)

👏👏👏👏👏

I hear you man, the job stuff sucks. There’s crap to put up with everywhere and it makes it painful to stay at ropes we don’t want at the moment but the recruiters are often just out for the commission. I’ve tried to keep my nose in the air sniffing for roles and things that have come along but ended up finding my current job on my own. There were some tempting companies and offers out there for sure but it can definitely be tricky to see what one is right. I’m not looking forward to having to change again but just keeping my options open in case shit hits the fan is a decent way to go about things.
