These days we have seen an increase in peaceful protests in Cuba, my country, and although I know that this is a complicated and dangerous issue, I have decided to give my opinion.

To understand the phenomenon, we must refer to the acute economic and health crisis that the COVID-19 pandemic left in its wake. It was at its climax, in July 2021, when the largest protest on the island since January 1959, when the socialist revolution led by Fidel Castro triumphed, broke out. Popular discontent over the lack of resources, police violence, censorship and repression; added to the collapse of the national health system and the consequent death of thousands of people, contributed considerably to the people's decision to take to the streets.

After the July 11 protests, there had been isolated situations, due to the fact that the trials of more than 800 people for their participation in the protests had resulted in exemplary sentences, even for minors.

New wave of protests / Nueva oleada de protestas

In the first half of 2022, part of the national electric power system begins to collapse, and the effects begin to become more and more common in the interior of the country. In some places there is a lack of electricity for more than 12 hours a day and people begin to organize the so-called "cacerolazos", which consist of protests with the noise of pots and pans from inside their homes.

After the explosion of the supertanker base in Matanzas (a fire that lasted more than a week to be extinguished), the electric power problems intensified and, in turn, the people's discontent.

All of the above, added to the inefficiency of the government to put an end to the economic crisis and the inflation that the island is experiencing, bring us to the present, when Hurricane Ian surprised us and swept through part of western Cuba. The day after its passage, on Tuesday, September 27th, the electrical system collapsed 100%, the whole of Cuba was in blackout and without internet connection.

People tired after 24 hours without electricity began to protest again. This time they have improvised barricades in the streets to prevent the passage of any vehicle, including police patrols and military trucks. The people, first shouting "Put on the current", are now clamoring for freedom. Of course, the repression has not been long in coming, the regime takes advantage of the nightfall to take away the internet service and to launch into the streets the military in civilian clothes to repress the demonstrations.

Cuba, my country, where I was born and still live, is about to change its history. From the island of free health and education, there is only the fluttering lie that less and less people believe, we are a country that has been asleep for a long time. Could it be that the awakening has already arrived?

It's kind of weird that we don't hear anything about Cuba over here in the US. Thanks for the update I had no idea this much was going on

Almost always the channels to the south of Florida and something in the Washington Post, but there really needs to be more talk about what we Cubans live day by day. Thank you.
