Join me on a tour of the lower part of Riley Ranch Nature Reserve, specifically The Canyon Loop Trail. To access the lower trail you have to take a short but somewhat steep trail down to the Deschutes River. The trail follows the river for a short way as it begins its journery out of Bend Oregon to the Columbia River some 100 miles to the north. So let's start the adventure!
After crossing the upper portion of the Reserve it is time to head down into the canyon. This picture shows a bit of the smoke that was in the air from a nearby prescribed burn. Luckily as I descended into the canyon the smoke became a distant memory.
A bit of the rim-rock as I continue down.
This connector trail to the Canyon Loop Trail below is called Robins Run. As you can see it is somewhat steep but luckily fairly short. Short will be gratefully appreciated on the way back up. 😁
After reaching the bottom a small map show me my location. I choose the south direction to start the loop.
A sturdy bench bolted to a rock. A great place to sit and watch the river go by.
A short trail down to the river.
