The hype around generative AI isn't getting any smaller by the day. Many companies see how good it'll look for them to follow the trend by adding generative AI functionalities to their products. Procreate, the popular iPad design app, however, "will never go there." And artists praise them for taking such a stand against generative AI.

Generative AI has proven to be a disruptive technology across many different and diverse fields. Now people can simply be anywhere and generate images, even art, whenever they like on their devices. Because of their training data, these AI models are able to deliver and generate images. Creators—especially artists—are most concerned that their works are taken and used for training data.
What's most bothersome, though, is the idea that people are using AI more and apparently becoming less creative. There is now less appreciation for original and human-inspired artwork. Procreate sees this as a dangerous and "uncreative" path to go down, with the CEO adding that he "hates generative AI."
Procreate is a beloved tool for digital art creators—a popular iPad design app that is known for how intuitive its interface is, its vast and powerful features, and the respect it has for the creative process. Countless artists rely on Procreate to bring their creativity and visions to life. And, truly, Procreate has always been about supporting human creativity.
*"You've been asking about AI. I usually don't talk about our products. I prefer that our products speak for themselves." * James Cuda, CEO Procreate, said in a video via Procreate on X. "I really f****** hate generative AI.” “I don’t like what’s happening in the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists. We’re not going to be introducing any generative AI into our products. Our products are always designed and developed with the idea that a human will be creating something."

Many Procreate artists appreciate Procreate's stance against the use of generateive AI in the app. It is widely understood that many of the models may have been trained on their work and that AI would generally put a lot of people out of jobs and reduce employment opportunities. Because if you can do it yourself, there is less chance that you will pay someone else to do it for you. And in the creative world, human-inspired content differs vastly from AI-generated ones.
Comparing Procrete with popular design apps like Adobe, it offers a one-time purchase of $12.99 for all of their features. Adobe, on the other hand, requires a rather highly priced monthly subscription. And there are "just so many generative tools here and there."

Procreate's anit-AI pledge stands as a beacon of hope for artists who want to stick to the good old ways of being creative. And on that note, James Cuda concluded, "We don't exactly know where this story is going to go or how it ends, but we believe that we're on the right path, supporting human creativity."
