My brother (@yinjuolu) has a thing for putting his favourite songs on endless repeat, but this time I vibed really hard with some of the songs by one interesting artist. I didn't think to check any of the songs or the artist out until he went away for a few days, then I realised that I had grown to love the songs. And now I have had them on repeat for a long time. Here are my top three.
Anendlessocean. I found the artist's name to be very interesting. I wondered why he didn't use his name, or something conventional, and then what it means to him. All his bio read was "In service," which further piqued my curiosity. I liked it, though. The two words are enough to speak of what he, Anendlessocean (AEO) is doing with his music.
Alone
My favourite line in this song is "O yo mi, o yo mi," meaning "It satisfies me, It satisfies me" in Yoruba. And it is not only for the way it sounds in the song, but what it actually means for me, that the presence of the Lord is enough, and that it satisfies.
Why I love this song very much, as well as many of AEO's songs, is the energy I feel when I listen to it. I always have my head grooving to the song each time I listen to it. And it is even sweeter to me because it has some Yoruba words in it, giving it a homely feeling.
Alakori
Alakori is a Yoruba term for a stubborn person. In the song by Anendlessocean, he describes his passion for following Jesus anywhere as being an alakori, recognising in faith that he is covered no matter what may...
With you I do not feel discomfort (hmm hmm hmm umm)
I do not fear, I do not feel bad luck
Yea you've got all of my devotion (hmm hmm hmm umm)
From your sweetest touch, I would'nt run
The chorus is the juiciest part for me. He mostly eulogises God in a very, say, electrifying way. It is a rather interesting musical way to call the names of God in the Yoruba language.
Adunbalo, Oluso, Olorun Isaki
Olugbala, Olulana, kon fin me
Adunbalo, Oluso, Olorun Isaki
Olugbala, Olulana, kon fin me
Adunbalo is simply used to describe a person that is "sweet" to walk with. Oluso describes a person that watches and guards. Olorun means God, while Isaki is Isaac, hence God of Isaac. Olugbala is saviour, Olulana is waymaker, and "kon fin me" is a pidgin way of saying "come find me."
The instrumentals in the song is another reason why it hits HARD. I'm not sure how to aptly describe it, so I'll leave you to have your firsthand experience by listening to it.
Be
You see this one... You see this one... It gets me very energetic and pumped. I actually get up when it's on and begin dancing all the steps that I have no idea their origins. And in my eyes, I am the baddest dancer in this universe. Then at the top of my voice, I would be singing the lyrics, especially this part...
Je’n jebi
(Bata toh wo sese, aso toh wo Sara)
Je’n jebi o ooo
(Angeli malaika, your only desire)
My meli my my lover
(Bata toh wo sese, aso toh wo Sara)
In awe of your persona
(Angeli malaika, your only desire)
Won’t leave you for no other
That’s now until forever
Which translates to...
Let me be like
(The shoes you wear on your feet, the cloth you wear on your body)
Let me be like
(Angelic spirit, your only desire)
I mean, all of the lyrics of the song are just smooth, but what I am saying is that this one makes me dance.
But if I'm being honest
I actually love all of Anendlessocean's songs. I have listened to all of them available on Spotify, including the ones by other artists he was featured in. There's Love Practitioner, Bire, and Ji that are also my favourites.
Anendlessocean already ranked high as one of my favourite Nigerian musicians. He does Christian music in a different, fresh, and exciting way to me. Interestingly, I have heard from people that we look alike. One even argued with me that they were my songs because the image of him they saw looked just like me. I could understand why, considering the hairstyle mostly, but we definitely have opposite types of voices, and he's even way taller than me.
Anyway. Here's my entry to this week's Three Tune Tuesday by @ablaze with my top songs from AEO. If you want to indulge yourself in more from AEO, you may check out this Spotify playlist
