Hello everyone in this amazing community.
I hope this post met us well
We are in a digital age, where we get everything online almost instantly.
social media plays a significant role in our lives. But the big question that keeps coming to my mind is *"should our online presence be a deciding factor in getting a Job or Getting Hired?
Personally for me Requesting our social media handles as a job requirement raises concerns about my privacy, discrimination, and relevance to job qualifications, it just sounds very crazy.
Social Media is now one of the biggest means of communication, meeting new people and of course getting entertainment.
There are different examples of social medias out there, all are having a unique feature that differentiate it from others.
In today prompt we a will be talking about why or whether employers should be requesting for the social media handles of prospective job seekers.
Or weather the social media should be used to judge job seekers professionalism.
For Me I personally don't support the act of using our social media handle as a requirement to get Jobs.
I have a couple of Social Media handles.
I Have heard of people who applied for a job and then they were been asked to share your social media handles? It's really becoming more common. I don't see this as anything near being fair.
Let's Imagine this Scenario: you're applying for a very top prestigious job that you have always dreamed of. You've perfected your resume (CV), practiced your interview skills, and made a lot of research about the company inside out.
But then, you're asked to hand over your social media handles.
Personally for me, It feels like giving out your home keys to strangers.
I still don't know why Some people think it's okay for employers to go through our social media profiles. They say it gives them a better idea of who we are and whether we'd be a good fit for the company. But that's just bull shit. If the companies needed our social media handles, it shouldn't be a compulsory thing, it should be optional, not because my Social Media accounts has any profanities or inappropriate contents.
I believe our social media profiles are usually a mix of personal and professional stuff. Do we really want our employers poking around in our private lives? It's like they're asking to read our diary lol🤣.
Social Media can contain a lot of discrimination,
Nowadays social media, has a lot people who react, comment and act on ground for bias and prejudice, for me this reason another
What I really think is that:
Let every employers focus on what really matters: our skills, experience, and qualifications. They shouldn't be snooping through our social media profiles like a detective looking for clues, and if perhaps it's important for the Job to provide our social media handles, they can request for LinkedIn handle, which is quite more professional than Facebook, Tik Tok and the likes.
And if you're a job seeker, don't be afraid to speak up. If an employer asks for your social media handles, you can politely decline. Tell them you're happy to provide professional references or showcase your skills in a different way.
In conclusion: our online lives private, I strongly recommend providing a linkedin handles, if it's very important to provide a social media handle for a job , and also let all the employers focus on what really matters: being awesome and productive at our jobs!
