This character in my personal point of view is among the best taxidermists in history, I had never seen works with birds that are almost 100 years old so well preserved and worked on, the question is?? who was Gunther? the museum gives us a little story about the personal life of this german born in frankfurt in 1909 Mr. Günther was very prepared and did his taxidermy and dermoplasty course in germany, Günther was invited to the island of Madeira in 1930 he took the position in the museum as a taxidermist and at the same time he was its founder!😲😲
Have you ever wondered how they used to get specimens of marine animals that inhabit depths of up to 2000 meters if the technology that we have today did not exist? many scientists like Günther had some "contracts" with fishermen that when they caught fish they opened their stomachs and when they saw a different animal they took the specimen to Günther and that was how he got many species of very rare animals! He worked for 60 years in the museum and died in 1997. He never retired and continued creating science until the end of his days, leaving his mark on modern science! published more than 55 scientific papers, discovered more than 10 new species! Mr. Günther was not only German, he loved living and feeling Portuguese! therefore he was part of the Portuguese science!👨🏫👴👴
Doing taxidermy is something that is not easy at all and requires a lot of technique and years of experience. One day I had the privilege of doing taxidermy on some birds at the experimental science school in Venezuela and from experience it is very difficult, but Günther made it seem that this job was very easy, and he was able to create the best preservations in the world! I think it is not given the importance it deserves since I work in Portugal and my country is very "weak" in the scientific field!😲😲
In total to date there are 41166 species of animals and plants registered in the museum! we can find everything from insects to an interesting collection of rocks, since the museum also puts a lot of emphasis on learning about the ecology of the island! Madeira is an "independent" island of Portugal whose location places it among a "tropical island" this makes it present a unique biodiversity in Europe!😱😱
As an artist, Günther left a collection of scientific works that he designed himself, and which are exhibited in the museum. I really liked seeing his paintings, he classified each species of bird before doing the taxidermy! A Biologist does not graduate with the ability to do preservation work! and Günther, in addition to doing taxidermy, also had a job in taxonomy, making him a complete scientist!🤩😱
This is a work of collecting rocks that can be found on the island, Madeira has another small group of islands attached and since many islands are of volcanic origin, then we can find a sample of lava and what is known as a "volcanic bomb". "Which is those lava stones that are thrown into the air! here you can see how they look after cooling and fossilizing! I got excited when I saw this because I never in my life witnessed an erupting volcano👨🏫👨🎓
Tropical species👨🏫🧠/ Especies tropicales 🕋
There is nothing more interesting on the planet than a tropical climate! here we can find the most extraordinary species of plants and animals, madeira may not be a "brazil" but it has many mysterious things that you do not find in the rest of europe! 3 thousand species of insects are unique to the island! and it is something interesting that we find in isolated climates! I mean, 20% of the island's insects cannot be found anywhere else on the planet!🚩😱👨💻
Impeccable work by Günther👨🏫🧠/ Trabajos impecables de Günther 🕋
Here we see some of Günther's early works and as you can see they are very well preserved! but this is not his specialty! hope you see the fish and the birds!🤔🤔
Ichthyologist👨🏫🧠/ Ictiologista 🕋
If you wonder what ichthyologist means, let's say they are those scientists who specialize in studying fish!😎😍
Amazing, right? here there is no replica of anything! everything is original!😍
my love for the museum👨🏫🧠/ Mi amor por el museo🕋
an exemplary site🧭🕋
For me, the education of our children is reinforced here! the day we decided to take it to museums and teach them about nature that day we will form people capable of loving the planet and preserving our fauna and flora! and in the long run we save our planet! That's why museums deserve a space on HIVE!😲😲
