The beauty of nature's residents.

A few lovely new surprises in here today.
018.jpg

I love all aspects of nature and nothing can beat a Spring season with all of it's new life all over the place.
The first photo is a female Navy Dropwing (Trithemis furva).

Here was my first new surprise at the back Bougainvillea fence of our garden. I cannot decide if it is a Stream Hawker (Pinheyschna subpupillata).
088.jpg

Or could it be an Evening Hawker (Anaciaeschna triangulifera).
090.jpg

And this tiny Damselfly was another new one for me taken on the same bougainvillea fence.
266.jpg

A closer shot tells me that it might b a Sooty Threadtail (Ellatoneura frenulata).
270.jpg

The next two photos are the same Dragonfly in the first photo, but in different colorful settings.
030.jpg

022.jpg

I think that many of us know a male Carpenter Bee. He is not really a bee and I caught this one flying around guess where?
Yes, on the same bougainvillea fence in our garden.
052.jpg

This is a clean shot of the Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa caffra).
042.jpg

And finally, no this is not a cricket. It is a Garden Locust (Acanthacris ruficornis).
I don't think this is the same specie of the locust plague that we currently have further inland in the country.
052.jpg

Now you may ask why I am wearing gloves in this heat, as you can see in the last photo above.
No. I am not scared of the locust biting me, as I have picked up an allergy to direct contact with sunlight and I have to protect my hands as else rashes will form on them.

Amazingly in my younger days I used to go about in only boots and shorts and nowadays I have to cower in whatever shade I can find. Maybe my skin is taking it's revenge because of all the years that I bared it to the blazing African sun.
But such is life and it will not stop me from enjoying nature.

We hope that you enjoyed the colorful post.

And That's All Friends.

Beautiful photos of such an amazing little creature. Love dragonflies ...I once had to have some antibiotics that gave me a sensitivity to sunlight whilst I was taking them. It was awful ...I actually had to stop so I can empathise with your situation. Do they have any idea what particularly is causing the allergic reaction? Is it the UV or Vit d ...just curious ...really interesting thing that has happened to you, and I'm sorry it is impacting you in this way.

Thank you Samantha and when I bought my first camera I spent the first year in self training to get dragonflies.
We or should I say Papillon bought a church property in a high crime area In Johannesburg. This was in 2002. We changed the hall into a computer training center and we rented the church out to Christian groups.

Then in 2012 we had 5 burglary attempts and luckily the people that live in flats around the property scared the burglars away. They knew that we were training their children, but this didn't stop two guys from accosting me at the low wall in the front of the property with one sticking a gun into me neck and the other one with a knife ransacking my pockets.

So after this I decided to raise the walls buy building them up higher and the trouble came when I put a razor wire fence over the top of the wall. I didn't wear gloves and the razor wire cut my hands in many places. Not deep cuts, but only little cuts on both hands.
I put the fence up in broad daylight with a very hot sun shining down, but the sun didn't trouble me, as I was used to it.

Two nights later I couldn't sleep as my hands had weird little burning hives on them. Those little things burned like hell fire and we went to an emergency at a hospital where they gave me some ointment. That however was not a cure and later whenever I went into the sunlight these little things would pop up, first on my hands, then on my legs and elbows to this day.
So since 2012 we have been searching for a cure and we have seen many skin doctors and dermatologists with no answers.

The only thing that help is Cortisone and I use a Cortisone cream and take 1 Cortisone tablet every day.
So the search continues.

Zac.

Gosh, I have never heard of anything like it...what a weird reaction 😔 so strange hey. I am sorry you have to go through this. I hope they find out the reason one day and can help to get rid of it once and for all for you. Yeah crime in JHB got really bad didn't it. We left Durban in 2001 and moved to the UK. It was just getting too close to home for us.🙏 Hope you are having a good festive season !PIZZA !ALIVE

Funny as that is what some of the doctors also said. I still think that some chemical reaction from the razor wire cuts were responsible for the effects.
Thankfully we have gotten used in how to treat it and I have just to keep my hands out of the sun. But how does a nature photographer do that? Impossible.

We were in one of the worst suburbs and it was like a war zone with a difference as it had prostitutes and druggies on every corner.

UK should be a haven compared to this, but we cannot think to emigrate, as too many poor people depend on our charity

All of the very best to you guys for the New Year.

Whatever Hawker it is, it is a beautiful dragonfly 😍

Although it is a huge bee, it's amazing that you could photograph it in flight 👍 I have only managed to take a few photos of really big birds in flight.

The locust looks cute - we also have green ones here, and these are the biggest "grasshoppers" I know 😁

As always, lovely post and great photos of these little critters, Zac 😀

Hawker is only mankind's name for this beautiful creature 😉
Not really, as people has spent hours studying them and I suppose that they name and group them into species according to their appearances and habits.

Thank you for the compliment, but I was only in the right place to get the Carpenter bee my friend 😉

I think that we have 11 families of different grasshoppers, crickets and locusts in the order of "ORTHOPTERA" here in the country. Yes as usual some of these guys can get very big.

Thank you again and I am glad that you liked the post Hannes.

Cheers and thanks.

You know that I wouldn't remember their names anyway 😂 !LOLZ

You were in the right place and fast enough, my friend - I certainly wouldn't be fast enough 😂

Hahaha, I must have written their names a thousand times over the past years and I still have to go to my book to get their names. Sometimes I even forget my surname 🤣
When they ask, how old are you, I say ask my wife 🤣

3 shots Hannes and the one in the post was spot on, so just luck methinks 😉

Cheers and thanks.

I forget many things, but I haven't forgotten my own name yet 😁

I would have needed a lot more shots and still wouldn't have had the bee in the image 🤣

Hahaha, wait until you call your wife by another woman's name 🤣

One day when you visit I will show you exactly how to do it. Bonus is that you are already a free hand shooter 😊

Cheers and thanks.

I think this will either cure me or be the last words I say 🤣 !LOLZ

I know it's no bee, and I only had my short long lens with me, but I am proud that a few shots have got reasonable sharp last week 😁

!PIZZA and !BEER - sounds like a nice dinner :)

If you want to lose weight it's easy my friend, just call your wife by another woman's name.
You won't eat for a year 🤣 !LOLZ

Great photos for a short lens and I like the 3rd photo the best. If you can get that church with a still clear water reflection, it will be magic methinks.

So yes with the correct lens you can indeed get great shots of flying birds.

Cheers and thanks.
