Mother’s Day is a special time set aside to celebrate our mothers and everything that they mean to us. It is not the only occasion for us to honour them as we are expected to honour them as often as we can.

El Día de la Madre es un momento especial reservado para celebrar a nuestras madres y todo lo que significan para nosotros. No es la única ocasión para honrarlas, ya que se espera que las honremos tan a menudo como podamos.

Sometimes, we never know how much impact our parents have until they are no longer here with us and so I make it a point of duty to seize the slightest opportunity to daily appreciate my mother through my words of affirmation, prayers, gifts, time, acts of services and regular hugs.

A veces, nunca sabemos el impacto que tienen nuestros padres hasta que ya no están aquí con nosotros y, por eso, es mi deber aprovechar la más mínima oportunidad para apreciar diariamente a mi madre a través de mis palabras de afirmación, oraciones, regalos, tiempo, actos de servicio y abrazos regulares.

My Ever Bubbling Mother

I look at my mother and I admire who she is. Sometimes, I think back to all we have been through as a family and how that could have broken us but she kept us together with her words of wisdom. Here are a few qualities I appreciate about my mother:

Miro a mi madre y admiro lo que es. A veces pienso en todo lo que hemos pasado como familia y en cómo eso podría habernos roto, pero ella nos mantuvo unidos con sus palabras de sabiduría. Estas son algunas de las cualidades que aprecio de mi madre:

1. Strength: I cannot even begin to stress how strong my mother is. The most recent display of strength would have to be when my father passed on and how she has managed the home after then. It was not easy but she never allowed the family feels the loss in a great way.

2. Resilience: The way my mother has recovered from difficulties that have come her way over the years is just amazing. Imagine a woman who was born without a silver spoon with the odds against her, worked hard, never gave up, and God blessed her. Those days were tough but her resilience kept her going.

2. Resiliencia: La forma en que mi madre se ha recuperado de las dificultades que se le han presentado a lo largo de los años es simplemente increíble. Imagina a una mujer que nació sin una cuchara de plata y con las probabilidades en contra, trabajó duro, nunca se rindió y Dios la bendijo. Aquellos días fueron duros, pero su capacidad de recuperación la hizo seguir adelante.

3. Intelligence: This part of my mother encouraged me so much as a growing child. Just watching how intelligent my mother spoke and acted in situations inspired me to want to be an intelligent person someday. She was and still is my role model in a lot of areas of my life.

3. Inteligencia: Esta parte de mi madre me animó mucho cuando era un niño. El simple hecho de ver lo inteligente que era mi madre al hablar y actuar en las situaciones me inspiró a querer ser una persona inteligente algún día. Ella fue y sigue siendo mi modelo a seguir en muchas áreas de mi vida.

4. Industrious: My mother is not much of a businesswoman but in her career path, she was indeed diligent and hard-working. She was one of those few cases that rose in her career through merit. It was clear for everyone to see because of how much effort she put into anything she does.

5. Amazing Personality: My mother is one of the funniest people I know. She is easygoing, humble, the sweetest person with a heart of gold, generous to a fault, cheerful, forgiving, and homely.

6. Love for God and Humanity: Her love for God is second to none. My mother is that Christian you see and say “if this is what Christianity is, then I want to be a Christian”. For every success and blessing in her life, she attributes it back to God.

I grew up watching my mother treat everyone regardless of societal class, status, age, gender, and tribe equally. She would always say, “We are equally God’s children and nothing makes any of us better than the other” and she always lets her actions confirm it. My mother believes people can change and gives humans a lot of chances to be good people. It’s insane to me sometimes.

Crecí viendo a mi madre tratar a todos por igual, independientemente de la clase social, el estatus, la edad, el género y la tribu. Ella siempre decía: "Somos igualmente hijos de Dios y nada hace a ninguno de nosotros mejor que el otro" y siempre deja que sus acciones lo confirmen. Mi madre cree que la gente puede cambiar y da a los humanos muchas oportunidades de ser buenas personas. A veces me parece una locura.

Sunday was no different. Unfortunately, I did not have as much as I wanted to splurge on her. So I bought her favourite wine and her current cravings. I also sang for her, prayed for her, and spent time with her laughing and chatting away. I cannot start to emphasize how much influence my mother had on the person I am today. I carry her words of wisdom engraved in my heart everywhere I go.

El domingo no fue diferente. Desgraciadamente, no tenía todo lo que quería para regalarle. Así que le compré su vino favorito y sus antojos actuales. También le canté, recé por ella y pasé tiempo con ella riendo y charlando. No puedo empezar a recalcar la influencia que tuvo mi madre en la persona que soy hoy. Llevo sus palabras de sabiduría grabadas en mi corazón allá donde voy.

As the mother that she is, she still found a way to quickly whip up some jollof rice and yummy chicken to mark the day. My sister and her family came over and we ate, danced, and celebrated the gift of life. A gift that has enabled us to have our mother with us regardless of all life has thrown at us. I am hopeful that with each passing day, I would show her how much I love and appreciate her for all she has done for me from birth to date.

Como madre que es, encontró la manera de preparar rápidamente un arroz jollof y un delicioso pollo para celebrar el día. Mi hermana y su familia vinieron y comimos, bailamos y celebramos el regalo de la vida. Un regalo que nos ha permitido tener a nuestra madre con nosotros a pesar de todo lo que la vida nos ha lanzado. Tengo la esperanza de que cada día que pase le demuestre lo mucho que la quiero y aprecio por todo lo que ha hecho por mí desde que nací hasta la fecha.
