It is often easy to say humanity has a lust for war. It is easy to say that conflict has characterized man's evolution. And while it can be argued that all living things have intermittent fights that arise from want for certain basic needs, human's capacity to swiftly escalate it’s disagreements into mass and deadly conflict is seriously astonishing.
“There is going to be a Russian invasion of Ukraine” against “the West is stoking tensions in Eastern Europe”. Have we heard this kind of rhetoric before? Sure we have. The rhetoric and deceptive manoeuvres that normally act as a precursor to war is what we see now between the West and Ukraine on one side and Russia on the other.
Most of the countries that make up the West are fairly emphatic about their support for Ukraine while Russia - who assuredly have sneaky allies in this conflict - says it has no plans of invading but just wants to protect itself from a systemic encroachment of the West through Ukraine.
Cast your mind more than 6 decades ago. The war of that era destabilised the entire world and quite frankly I expect that a full blown war between these two parties would drag the rest of the world into it.
Imagine man's capacity to influence others into a conflict they have no business being a part of. Yes! I'm talking about South America, Africa and many Asian countries. The countries currently at the forefront of this conflict are “World Powers” emphasis on world. So they determine how much of the world gets drawn into their disagreement.
Once the line is drawn, I expect only a few nations will remain neutral. This is quite sad because with war comes poverty, hunger, death and surrendering of certain basic social rights. Imagine being plunged into such strife simply because two countries on the farthest parts of the world refuse to compromise certain ideologies.
Russia and the US - actual leader of the West - have two of the largest military hardware globally including nukes and such can be used to devastating global effect.
As the largest producer of energy in Europe, Russia can leverage that to drive home their demands but already many Western countries have begun moves to source energy from other countries and it means they can continue their stance undeterred. Tensions are high and it has impacted various commodities already including oil.
Russia recently said it is demilitarising it’s border with Ukraine, a statement that has been debunked by the West and it's media.
I just hope this is resolved through dialogue.
