“Jennifer! you are running late”, Aaron’s voice rang from the bathroom startling Jennifer to her feet. She quickly ran into the bathroom almost knocking Aaron, who was brushing his teeth by the mirror.

“Get out! Get out!!”, Jennifer almost screams at Aaron while pushing him out of the bathroom. She slams the door shut. “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! I’m so late”. She was so late that she contemplated just putting on makeup and running to the office. Missing that meeting would mean no bonus. She really needed the bonus.

“How do I look?” Jennifer asked standing in front of the mirror, backing Aaron. Her kinky hair unable to stay positioned properly.

“You look exquisite, my love”, Aaron replied slowly walking towards her with a smile.

“Not now babe, I'm late”, Jennifer said with a kiss on his cheek, as she ran out the small apartment. The room had gotten smaller and smaller with everyday that passed.

Jennifer and Aaron had been living together for almost 8 months out of their 3 year relationship. Aaron was almost the guy of her dreams...almost. There were kinks in him that only she saw. It was his second-guessing, his inability to grab opportunities, his shyness, his naivety...he calls it humility. “The meek shall inherit the earth”, he’d always say. The Earth huh? Maybe she was being too tough on him. Or was she?

Aaron had it easy. Everything handed to him on a silver platter. He hadn’t worked a day in his life. Premier schools, vacations abroad, a 5 figure pocket money...the life she had always wished she had.

Jennifer admired Aaron’s decision to abandon the wealth of his family. The Uschenkos were oligarchs, pilfering the wealth of their nation. He had been a part of it right until he came to the National Art College in Monaco. There was a perception he had about his family back home but that had changed. He felt sorry...he said so.

It was difficult for Jennifer. She was born on a farm in Cote d’Ivoire. Cocoa was all she had known but she had given it all up for a perilous journey for something greener...something better. She had travelled all the way through the desserts of Africa and had crossed Libya into Europe. It had been a tough journey but she had to make it for the family she left behind.

Sometimes Jennifer wished that Aaron had been different. That he had not cut off from his family. The money would have helped her a lot. Artists earned nothing and his was far from what she'd call art. Maybe she was just too practical to believe that it would work. He had a good soul but her journey had made her see good souls that had been crushed. She could tell...she was one of such.

A SNAP FOR YOU

Sort:

This is a great one, I like when people try to justify their contempt of someone else by admiting they're a little bit jelous. I like Jennifer for being able to push herself and strive for a comfortable life through hard work, who wont let her tough start in life stop her. I know tons of people like that. But, Aaron seems like the kind of person who would be great at a party. Everyone needs an easy going artsy friend who just floats through life haha. Love it!

Hmmm. Sometimes love isn't enough. A lot of things play a background role in the way relationships eventually turn out. Jennifer has seen horrors and understands life a little different that Aaron. This is why they might just be better being friends. I think.

@killerwot I've got a story that you might like. Once I post it you will know. Just know that you inspired me a lot to write it the way I did.

Brilliant, looking forward to reading it!

@silentbot star 4

Very good I like

Danké sir

Wow! Weldon for the great job. I enjoyed your post

Thanks

Your style is really excellent, i like it a lot! Write on Pirate! 😊

A SNAP FOR YOU @mondoshawan

and his was far from what she'd call art.

Honestly, I love the relationship between Jennifer and Aaron but damn Jennifer is a savage 😂

Aaron was almost the guy of her dreams...almost

Great story though! I hope they work out the finances...

but damn Jennifer is a savage 😂

Hahahaha.

I think she is just practical. You must understand that she left an entire continent just to work and earn. Imagine after her travails that she finds someone who (to her) throws away everything she came all the way to find. There would obviously be a cultural difference and their perspective would be different.

I think most people will feel this.

Oh... Say no more! You are absolutely right. I can understand and sympathize with Jennifer perspective. And it is true that there is this big cultural difference. No doubt.

But that doesn't stop those lines from being hell a funny!

But that doesn't stop those lines from being hell a funny!

Hahahaha. True...very true.

I love this. Art is just a representation of real life.

Thank you!

This is so relatable in a weird way. I don't get Jennifer's concept though no matter how hard i tried. Aaron's quite the dork though...🤭

I don't get Jennifer's concept though no matter how hard i tried.

How come, @deraaa ? I'd love to know what you think.

It's nothing bad at all. Just I don't get her character. Maybe it's because I just like Aaron and she may seem to want too much? Forgive me😆

Oh ok. She isn't even leaving Aaron yet. Hopefully he'll improve or she will.

Hmm. They have their work cut out for them. Lol.

I honestly don't see anything wrong in Aaron, he seems like a pretty decent guy.

Aaron is decent but remember what Harvey Dent said to Batman and Jim Gordon in The Dark Knight, "you expect us to be decent men in an indecent time". Hahaha

Truth is life isnt just black and white, good and bad. There is always something small in-between. Jennifer needed someone that could at least not subtract from her determination because she had a lot riding on it.

I think they are both good people but might not be good together in the long run.

You're right, Jennifer is a determined woman who has ambitions while Aaron is a guy that just wants to take life anyhow he sees it despite coming from a wealthy background

They're backgrounds and social standing/upbringing are defining factors.

This is a really delightful story, and hints at the value of the value of art, which isn't always rewarded in a monetary sense.

Yeah. I believe art should be aesthetic in nature rather than being ascribed as an asset class. The rich have made good art almost unreachable to every other person.

I can't blame Aaron for leaving a well-off but money-driven family. Money may be a source of temporary happiness, but choosing who you love to be with and doing what you are passionate about can offer bliss that could be genuinely felt.

Money may be a source of temporary happiness, but choosing who you love to be with and doing what you are passionate about can offer bliss that could be genuinely felt.

I think they had cultural difference. It has been known as over the world in stories.

I think it is easier for people that have known wealth all their life to give it up than for someone struggling from the gutters, who have known poverty all their life to give wealth up.

Those born poor and those born wealthy see things differently because they have been on opposing sides of the spectrum.

Thanks for making this write-up worth it.

Since we all come from different social statuses and cultures, we can't really dictate what others should feel and desire. As humans, we are sometimes driven by our dreams of achieving what we don't have and striving to step out of our comfort zones to experience the things we have never done before.

Your characters did well in portraying their roles. Well done! ^_^

we are sometimes driven by our dreams of achieving what we don't have and striving to step out of our comfort zones to experience the things we have never done before.

You hit the nail on the head with this. It's human nature. I think most people get bored with experiencing just a few things. Life on the other side is what some what to experience in certain cases. I think our wants are insatiable, the ability to be okay irrespective is what we need to cultivate.

Greetings

Wants are insatiable that needs are often forgotten. The way I see the world now is that those who already have everything are the ones who want more from life, while those who barely have something are the ones who are contented. I think how we see the difference between necessity and luxury is based on how we are raised.

Just my opinion ^_^

I agree with you totally.

The message of the story is clear. Growing up with comforts is part of a good life, but the other character reflects that it is not always everything. Living and getting your own passage through the world is another indescribable achievement.

Greetings

It is admirable to find those who try to make it away from their families wealth. Sometimes it is the person that haven't experienced wealth that might not relate to others forging their way independently.

Greetings

I feel some people are like that. They don't care for money but they love their own way of thinking. Maybe the girl wanted the money too but that's how the man was and he is happy with his own qualities.

So what happens if she stops working? How do they raise a family?

Relationships are hard! Sometimes it’s a wonder to me that any two people are compatible. But if they are willing to accept and adapt to one another’s differences and honor their partner’s unique qualities (vs. trying to change them), it can work. Enjoyable story, @piratethanos!

Thanks. It is really difficult accepting a person's flaws especially when your future depends on the person's decisions. You have been amazing, good cop... hahaha

Very good story that tells the relationship between two people who come from two different realities and different ways of looking at life Excellent dialogues. Saludos

Thanks

A great read. It's always sad when things don't work out, but I feel like Jennifer could be in for a surprise somewhere down the line. 😅

And I like the theme of sacrifice you have here. It's subtle but I felt it.

Regardless, I would have liked this story anyways. I'm a sucker for 'love-stories' or 'lost-love stories' etc. 😌

Cheers. 🍻

Thanks so much. It happens all the time and I somehow feel a lot of the people I talked to about this story felt a certain level of sympathy for Aaron. I dunno why that's weird to me. Hahaha

Perhaps Aaron wanted to be on his own without depending on his parent's wealth and also proving to Jennifer he is a man who would work for his money even when he isn't earning much in his business.
I just hope Jennifer doesn't give up. Beautiful story.

Thanks for gracing my story with your lovely comment. I think she wants him to strive more.

The challenge this week was to use the word "Artist" and to portray a character. You have met the first part of the challenge, and have doubled down on the second part. We come to know both characters in the space of a short story. Jennifer describes Aaron, as she sees him. However, in describing him, she reveals a great deal about herself. When we come to the end of the story we suspect that these two characters may not be fated to live their lives together.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. We appreciate that you engage with other authors in the community.

Inkwell for the win. Hahahaha. Thanks for this week's challenge.

I already had a couple of stories to post on the community but couldn't because of a really busy schedule. However, I had to write on this prompt because it was well chosen to test a writer's abilities and also seek ways to grow writing techniques.

Thanks once again and greetings.

I liked your story and give you a 4-star rating.😍

Wow! Thanks. I actually didn't expect a 4 star.

@piratethanos | "Aaron was almost the guy of her dreams...almost." Relationships can run very hypocritically. However, no one knows, who really deserves to be pitied? Aron? or.

Hmm...I hear you. Childhood, future expectations affect decisions regarding who to get married to. If you can't deal with marrying someone who can't match your drive, then it's ok to leave. I think we should be happy and if that will affect our overall happiness at the long run, I think it isn't too bad to realise it early enough.

If they don't get along, I hope they don't waste time giving each other that ends in vain. Everything must be killed at the beginning, lest love bloom and grow into betrayal.

Wow... I understand your point but also know that one should enjoy the journey because sometimes the destination is unexpected.

Yes, my friend, I see what you mean. I'm just trying to bring your short story to life. And I've done it. Keep the spirit to write.

Hahaha. Thanks so much. You really did.
